An update from the Nets for Africa Kenya Medical Mission – the team treated over 4,700 people and handed out 6,025 mosquito nets. In September Ker & Downey President David Marek and his wife Gana traveled to Kenya on their annual medical mission to assist doctors with blood tests, dental and eye exams, general doctor’s visits, handing out prescriptions, and distributing nets to the rural communities. This was the first year the team traveled to Kenya. In years past, the team has based their mission out of Uganda. Our medical mission this year took us near Eldoret in western Kenya […]
Each year, a team travels from the United States to the rural communities in Africa for a medical mission. Ker & Downey supports the team and Ker & Downey’s President David Marek and his wife Gana often make the trip each year to assist. Together, the group helps doctors and nurses check out patients and administer help where needed. They also hand out insecticide treated mosquito nets to protect against bites from malaria-carrying mosquitoes. Every year, the trip is a huge success. Around 15,000 people are seen by doctors and around nine thousand mosquito nets are handed out. We’ve also […]
Mosquito Nets for Africa are life-saving. Ker & Downey President David Marek updates us on the annual Nets for Africa trip to Uganda, coming up in August. Once again, Ker & Downey is supporting a team visiting Uganda who are taking much needed mosquito nets, medications, doctors and nurses to the rural areas around Mbale. The trip is set for August 27 through September 7 and once again Ker & Downey is matching all donations that come through our website. Last year’s trip was a huge success with over 9,000 mosquito nets distributed, 15,000 people saw a doctor for diagnosis – […]
After Thanksgiving, the Christmas shopping frenzy kicks off (or for some, picks up) with Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals. This time of year can leave shoppers stressed and wondering about the true value of a gift. In 2012 New York’s 92nd Street Y partnered with the United Nations Foundation to create Giving Tuesday, a day dedicated to giving back. At Ker & Downey, we’re committed to giving back at home and abroad to the communities in which we travel. You can read more about our efforts on our Philanthropy page. In the meantime, we’ve rounded up some gift ideas that give back to […]
A call to action from Ker & Downey’s President David Marek reveals just how easy it is to combine passion for travel in Africa with compassion for the people, wildlife and breathtaking lands cape of this great continent. Make a difference today. Protecting Africa’s Wildlife and Natural Resources My passion for African wildlife started in 1978 when I first flew over the Okavango Delta in a Cessna 206 and watched a herd of elephant trundle over the flood plains trailing a plume of dust. Seeing Africa for the first time instills in one the desire to preserve it for those […]
This year David and Gana returned to Uganda for their yearly mission to distribute mosquito nets and hand out medications to communities in need. His recap from the trip is below. Our medical mission to Uganda (July 17 – July 28) was a huge success. This year we served three communities over six days handing out 3,000 nets at each location. We hired local doctors and nurses that saw approximately 14,000 people (many seeing a doctor for the first time), and we provided over $20,000 in medications to treat illnesses ranging from malaria to intestinal worms. Somewhat as an afterthought, […]
Ker & Downey President David Marek and his wife Gana are in Uganda this week handing out medications and insecticide-treated nets with the Nets for Africa Program. Check out his update below and continue to check back for updates throughout the week. Today we completed our first two-day program at our first church just down from Sipi Falls. I don’t know if it’s rumor or fact that Sipi Falls got its name when Stanley and Livingstone were exploring the Nile and found the falls. Stanley, finding the waters of the falls looking so enticing said to Livingstone, “I’ve just got […]
Each year Ker & Downey employees work to provide mosquito nets to communities most in need in Africa. These insecticide-treated mosquito nets reduce the life-threatening effects of a mosquito bite and are saving lives across the continent. This year Ker & Downey has some exciting news regarding the distribution of the donated nets. Our efforts at Ker & Downey to provide insecticide-treated mosquito nets for the people of Africa is an ongoing endeavor. What started as a small medical mission trip in the summer of 2009 quickly grew to something much more. With your assistance, our Nets for Africa program […]
