Southern Ocean Lodge
The Southern Ocean Lodge, a world-renowned luxury lodge, has reopened its doors to guests after the devastating bushfires on Kangaroo Island in 2020. The reopening of the lodge is a major milestone for Kangaroo Island, which has been working hard to recover from the bushfires.
A new chapter for Southern Ocean Lodge
Set on a clifftop overlooking the Southern Ocean, the new Southern Ocean Lodge is a masterpiece of sustainable design, blending seamlessly with the natural landscape. Working with Kangaroo Island-born architect Max Pritchard (who owners James and Hayley Bailie worked with on the design of the first Southern Ocean Lodge) and design partner Andrew Gunner, the new lodge’s architecture takes its design cues from the rugged cliffs and ever-changing Southern Ocean. It features solar panels, rainwater harvesting systems, and a waste-to-energy plant.
The lodge’s 25 suites are designed to be luxurious and comfortable, combining natural elements like limestone flooring and Blackwood feature walls with custom-designed furnishings. Works commissioned from South Australian artists adorn the spaces. Each suite features a private balcony with breathtaking views of the ocean.
The lodge also features a world-class spa, a stunning infinity pool, and a gourmet restaurant that showcases the best of South Australian produce.
A sanctuary for nature lovers
Surrounded by pristine wilderness, Southern Ocean Lodge is a sanctuary for nature lovers. Guests can enjoy a variety of activities, including hiking, wildlife watching, and kayaking.

Exceptional guided adventures are included in your stay, with a range of activities offered daily allowing guests to personalize their itinerary.
