The 2019 Lunar New Year ushers in the Year of the Pig. Characterized as ethical, socially-aware, and lovers of leisure, those influenced by the pig in the Chinese zodiac tend to be drawn to opportunities to give back… and opportunities to lay back. Take travel inspiration from the pig in 2019 with our suggested experiences that complement both sides of the pig’s noble and carefree personality.
The Ethical Traveler
Kind-hearted and eco-conscious travelers will thrive in the Year of the Pig. With Ker & Downey, low-impact tourism and the comforts of home are not mutually exclusive. Mozambique makes our list for one of the most eco-friendly places that might not be on your travel radar. Elsewhere in Africa, sustainable destinations in Kenya, Tanzania, and Zambia are among many that offer ways to make a positive connection to the land, animals, and people.
Keep exploring and get inspired to do good on our Philanthropic and Conservation suggested journeys. Every journey to Cambodia with Ker & Downey directly benefits the ABOUTAsia schools built in rural Cambodian villages.
Relaxing Pursuits
While the Year of the Pig is especially favorable for a laid-back lifestyle, we think a relaxing journey has universal appeal, no matter your Chinese zodiac sign. Start in South Korea at Jeju Island or try Costa Rica’s blissful beaches and jungles. We suggest both countries for 2019 travel, but they aren’t your only options. How about departing for the desert in the oases of Egypt? Consider sliding into Sri Lanka for Indian Ocean breezes and beaches. Or perhaps make plans to hone your talent for relaxation from one of the world’s best bathtubs with a view; we love the vineyard views from Casa de Uco in Mendoza. And if indulging in food and drink is your preferred way to relax, our Culinary and Spirits/Wine suggested journeys will leave you extra chilled.
A Piggy Parade
If you want a more literal interpretation of this year’s zodiac sign, seek out the warthog on a luxury safari in East or Southern Africa. Botswana’s Okavango Delta is simply teeming with warthog families year-round. Namibia, South Africa, and 2019 travel pick Zimbabwe also host the Southern warthog subspecies; in Kenya and Tanzania you’ll find the Central African warthog roaming. With the latest iteration of Disney’s The Lion King releasing later this year (and Seth Rogen’s Pumbaa among its cast of characters) the warthog is destined to be noticed in the Year of the Pig.
