We are getting a kick out of watching the World Cup soccer (or football) teams. This year’s global assembly of contenders hail from countries that we have excitedly added to our travel bucket lists. Make it your goal to see these places too.

Egypt

Egypt is just one of those countries that never grows old. We could go there time and time again and still discover a new take on an ancient monument or archaeological site. Bustling bazaars, delicious dishes, and a leisurely cruise down Nile are just some experiences in Egypt that are as precious as the Pharoah’s treasures.

Brazil

The passion of Brazilian soccer fans is well-known. The nation hosted the 2014 World Cup, and they’re favorites to win it all in 2018. In Brazil the buzz is electric, the festivals are frenetic, and the beaches are hot. South American sizzle is at its peak in Rio de Janeiro. Sip on the national drink, the caipirinha, and let one of the world’s most energetic places sweep you away.

Portugal

The Atlantic coast nation is a pleasant surprise of beautiful beaches, vibrant cities, tranquil villages, and serene vineyards. It’s often overlooked on European travel plans, but its soccer team stands out. Star player Cristiano Ronaldo is known worldwide for his footy skills.

Panama 

It’s the first time Panama has ever qualified for the World Cup, and they are bringing their country into the limelight. The sliver of a nation sits at the bottom of Central America, and it’s jam packed with eco-tourism hot spots and gorgeous waters on both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts. Swim with sea turtles, hike in hazy mountain rainforests, or set off to the far flung island of Isla Palenque for complete detachment from everyday stresses.

England

Morocco

Farther inland, the North African country has tiny hamlets, desert palm oases, and tasty tangines worth exploring.

Serbia

Ancient and unexplored, Serbia is a hidden gem where distinct cultures have merged together in its cities and countryside. In the bucolic regions outside of Belgrade, life feels as though it’s stuck in time. Snowy ski hills aren’t ideal for soccer, but they are one of Serbia’s not-to-be-missed outdoor adventures.
