Bespoke WWII tours to Georgia dig deep into the history of the Georgian Army and their part in the battle of Texel. This Veteran’s Day, we’re taking a look at the unique journey we put together for WWII history buffs.
At Ker & Downey, we’re in the business of creating bespoke, once-in-a-lifetime journeys that you won’t find anywhere else. We like to believe that if you can dream it, we can make it happen. And that’s exactly what we did when a couple of World War II history enthusiasts approached us to plan a WWII tour unlike any of the WWII tours they’d been on before – off the beaten bath and suited to their particular interests. They’d already seen a lot of the notable sites from the World War II era and wanted to experience something truly unique and special.
Our team prepared a custom itinerary to Georgia and Amsterdam that focused on the Georgian Army and their uprising on Texel, one of Europe’s last battles of World War II. During this battle, a battalion of Georgian prisoners of war who had been forced into serving the German armies banded together with Dutch resistance forces to wrangle control of the island. Attacks and counterattacks finally ended nearly a month after Germany’s surrender, when Canadian forces arrived on Texel to disarm the remaining German troops.
In Georgia, the clients visited the town of Svaneti where local Svanetian warriors fought and defeated the German mountainous armies, the house of Soviet Leader Josef Stalin in his hometown of Gori, and met with a 91-year old veteran of World War II. Only in his late teens during the war, he was able to recount his time in the war with great clarity.
From Amsterdam, the clients also experienced a full day tour of Texel with a top Texel Historian and an unforgettable private flight. To get to the island, they traveled on the Warbird Catalina that saw four years of flying missions, destroyed three U-boats, and inflicted damage on another. They even had a water landing! Once there, they visited the Aviation and Wartime Museum, the Georgian cemetery, and the WWII monuments.
WWII tours that are customized to your interests allow you to better understand the history of World War II, whether by walking in your loved one’s footsteps, or by gaining a deeper appreciation for our Veterans.
