If you are considering a journey to Ecuador, #allyouneedis a quick glimpse at our favorite must-do experiences, from Ker & Downey experts Reid Bader, Bekah McNeel, Chris Slevin, and Cherie Tann.
Ecuador’s capital, Quito is a fine blend of colonial architecture and modern metropolis. Its amazing historic city center, on the doorstep of Casa Gangotena, is a celebrated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spectacular views of Quito and the surrounding Andes Mountains provide a thrilling sight from the city’s cable car that rises to over 14,000 feet.
2. The Rainforest + The Cloud Forest
The lushness of Ecuador cannot be denied. The biologically-rich Amazon area dominates nearly the entire eastern half of the country, serving as a playground for birding enthusiasts, hikers, and lovers of the outdoors. The Andean cloud forests, home of the eco-chic Mashpi Lodge, are equally as wild and wonderful, with flora and fauna on full display. Hop on board the Sky Bike at Mashpi, which glides through some of the most active areas of the canopy for an up-close view high above the trees.
3. Andean Highlands
Just beyond the famed market town of Otavalo you’ll find the gateway to the Andean Highlands. You’ll also find Hacienda Zuleta, a working ranch with resident cattle, a cheese factory, and a prime position in this stunning area of Ecuador. Take a ride on a clear day and you can see the Cayambe volcano in the distance from the back of your trusted horse.
Galápagos weaves a story of natural history, embodying a true sense of wonder that is hard to capture elsewhere in the world. From the adorable baby seals sunbathing on the beach, to the abundant birdlife, to the ancient tortoises meandering around Santa Cruz, the wildlife of these famed islands is just as curious about visitors as we are eager to observe and capture them in the perfect photo.
