Ker & Downey’s Michelle Nicholson recently returned from a trip to Brazil and fills us on in on Paraty – one of Brazil’s best-kept secrets. Here are her recommendations.
The UNESCO World Heritage town of Paraty in Brazil is one of Ker & Downey’s best-kept secrets. It’s a quaint, well-preserved fishing village with cobbled streets and original buildings. In its bay, you’ll find multicolored boats, with charming fishing huts and lively people going about their business. There are granite rock islands and hidden beaches for a secluded pocket of paradise.
Paraty is a wonderful destination to visit for a few nights. The town is so well preserved that you feel as if you are stepping back in time. The locals are friendly and the whole town has a laid back beach vibe to it. The bay itself is absolutely stunning with the Atlantic forest coming right down to the coast line.
What to Do
For a great overview of Paraty, spend a day on one of the colorful fishing boats. It’s a relaxing way to see the area and get introduced to its charm. Sail to Vermelha, and Cotia and Algodão islands, stopping along the way to swim and snorkel with sea turtles. And depending on weather conditions, finish off with a visit to Saco do Mamanguá, a tropical fjord of unique beauty.
Paraty is a foodie haven. It’s home to a few cachaça distilleries crafting liquor from local sugar cane and unassuming farm-to-table dining experiences. Enjoy the catch of the day at one of the simple restaurants around the bay, where the food is supplied by local fishermen.
Where to Stay
Pousada Literária is the newest hotel in Paraty’s historic city center. It’s a little bit further away from the buzz, but it’s a great option for families. Its 22 rooms are spacious and comfortable, and the common area features a large garden and a heated swimming pool. As the name suggests, this is the official pousada of Paraty’s literary fair – FLIP – held every July in the colonial town; and for that, every room has a reading space with titles specially selected for each guest, as well as a very complete and inviting library.
