Property Details
Upon arrival, the antebellum grandeur of Monmouth Historic Inn is immediately evident. Guests are greeted by the home’s massive white facade, its upper and lower porches and thick columns matching the iconic shape of Southern plantations. Step inside to see how the early 19th-century plantation home was masterfully restored to the 1830s era, when John Quitman and his family made their home within its grounds. Many of the antebellum-era pieces found throughout the hotel were original to the Quitman family. Over several years these furnishings were sourced from dealers across the region and returned to their original home.
A total of 30 rooms and suites are featured throughout the main house and its seven separate buildings. Archaeological digs helped discern where the original buildings stood during Monmouth’s plantation days. Each of these private cottages was erected on a former site to recreate the original shape of the grounds.
Decorated with period furnishings and fine fabrics, every private abode is designed to transport guests back to an era of bygone luxury. With one foot in the elegant past, today’s discerning travelers stay comfortable with modern amenities. All suites are air-conditioned and stocked with bottled water and Gilchrist & Soames bath amenities. Additionally, you’ll find complimentary wireless Internet access throughout the estate.
Monmouth Historic Inn boasts 26 acres of impeccable gardens, designed by Mississippi horticulturist and antebellum garden specialist Bill Garbo. The grounds are a perfect patchwork of lush green, stone paths, trees, and water features. Magnolias and azaleas add seasonal fragrance and color, and a variety migrating birds are known to visit its trees and fishing ponds.
Restaurant 1818 invites you to dine in the former parlors of the Main House or in the privacy of your suite. The a la carte menu features fresh Gulf Coast seafood and Southern cuisine staples like fried green tomatoes, gumbo, bread pudding, and bourbon pecan pie. Visit Quitman Lounge for pre-dinner hors d’oeuvres and a selection of drinks served all evening.
