Angkor Wat is a must-see UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit Angkor Wat with Ker & Downey and a private guide to get the most out of your visit.
The Angkor Archaeological Park in Cambodia is a must visit destination for many travelers. And rightly so – it’s incredible. The UNESCO World Heritage site stretches over 155 square miles and is a complex of elaborate temples, communication routes, and an extensive system of waterways, canals, and reservoirs from the Khmer Empire.
The park was once home to the greatest city in the ancient world, inhabited by one million people. It was quite extensive, but recent discoveries have led scientists to believe that the community and its system of temples and waterways is actually a lot larger than originally thought. Villages are still scattered throughout, with some tracing ancestors back to the Angkor period.
At the center of the world’s fascination with the Angkor complex is Angkor Wat. The ancient sacred site was built in the 12th century by the Khmer King Suryavarman II but was later left abandoned and neglected for 700 years. The magnitude of the site is hard to grasp in words and photographs. It’s 213 feet tall – that’s as high as the Notre Dame Cathedral, and used as much stone as the Great Pyramid of Khufu.
The engineering feat took 300,000 builders and artisans 32 years to complete. What’s even more impressive, the entire site was built without the use of mortar and those relief carvings you see on just about every single surface? Well they were carved after they were assembled. Can you imagine the expertise and patience that went into each and every detail?
While Angkor Wat is impressive, a visit to nearby temples is also a must. Bayon, Preah Khan, and Ta Prohm (the Tomb Raider temple) are worthy of exploring. Temple hop through Angkor with our journeys to Cambodia. You’ll get the best of temple exploring, luxurious accommodations, and cultural immersion for a well-rounded journey to the land of the legendary Khmer Empire.
