The Four Seasons Langkawi is a tranquil retreat located in the Adaman Sea off the coast of Malaysia. The Langkawi archipelago is commonly known as the “Jewel of Kedah,” but as Ker & Downey’s Devon Chapman recently found out, the real Jewel of Kedah is the Four Seasons Langkawi.
Having fallen in love with Southeast Asia about five years ago, I jumped at the opportunity to lead Ker & Downey’s latest FAM group in partnership with Malaysia Tourism. If nothing else, I was confident Kuala Lumpur would satiate my need for the bustling energy of the metropolitan cities I remembered; and who can say no to the lure of Langkawi’s lush jungles that end just feet from crystal clear waters. With a mixture of vibrant culture, dynamic cuisine, and natural beauty, Malaysia definitely did not disappoint.
We departed Houston for Singapore via Moscow and quickly learned why Singapore Airlines is consistently ranked one of the world’s best. After a few movies and a long nap, we found ourselves in one of the regions most well-connected airports. Quick hopper flights from Changi airport to Langkawi and Kuala Lumpur make Singapore the perfect jumping point for a trip to Malaysia.
If you place three pictures of the mountains, city, or beach in front of me, I will confidently choose the beach 100% of the time. So naturally, I was most excited to visit the Malaysian white sand beaches I had read so much about. Langkawi is a small island off the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia, known as the “the jewel” of the state of Kedah. It boasts an unspoiled feel that is rare to discover on the world’s most popular islands today. A main road circles the perimeter of Langkawi, and dense green jungle stretches inland as far as the eye can see. There is a sense of calm that permeates the warm air, it makes you want to take a deep breath and never be in a hurry to get anywhere ever again.
A highlight of our trip to Langkawi was time spent at the Four Seasons Langkawi on the north end of the island. The resort has captured the tranquil spirit and charm of the destination, and walking around the property is like a vacation in itself. Soaring ceilings are met by floor to ceiling windows, and the spacious villas invite guests to really move in and adopt the island lifestyle. On my last morning, I woke up early to take a morning yoga class on a lotus pond overlooking the Andaman sea. In this short hour, I had no less than three “this must be what bliss feels like” moments. Walking back from breakfast, I grabbed a paddle board from the cheery staff members at the resort’s water sports center and spent the better part of the next hour paddling up and down the coast. From this vantage point, I was able to admire views of limestone cliffs plummeting directly into white sand beaches that I had totally missed as I’d walked under the trees earlier that morning.
In true Four Seasons fashion, every detail of the Four Seasons Langkawi has been meticulously thought out. Guests have access to bikes to leisurely travel around the property. The kids club and pool areas offer activities to keep kids and families alike entertained. The Geo Spa incorporates the natural beauty of the Island, and each treatment room opens up to a private plunge pool bordered by naturally-formed limestone walls. This is truly a spa where you will want to dedicate an entire day of your trip.
From learning how to blend fragrant herbs into the perfect Malaysian curry, to listening to the legends of uninhabited islands on a private sunset cruise, to sipping a local lemongrass tonic while watching monkeys play in the trees above, Malaysia offers so many special experiences for Ker & Downey to curate your next truly unique escape.
