The many antiques here have traveled from Europe via the property’s owners, Jorge and Graciela, and Graciela’s paintings adorn every chamber.

Dining takes place in an elegant estancia-style dining room, where lovely breakfasts of homemade bread, jams, and cakes accompany endless panoramas of the area’s ravines and countryside. In the evening, rustic plates transform into colorful pieces of art representing regional and international specialties, the type of beautifully-presented food worthy of photographs at the table.

The best way to experience El Charabón and its country lifestyle is to spend time working alongside the resident gauchos and their trusty dogs as they tend to the cattle and sheep. The wonderfully friendly gauchos—sporting berets, ‘bombachas,’ and knives tucked into their colorful belts—always welcome a bit of help moving the stock or putting animals in the corrals. They will also ride along side you to the nearby beaches and wetlands to spot heron, peacocks, and other migrating birds. Given its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, El Charabón is the perfect base from which to explore some of Uruguay’s wild coastline around Cabo Polonio, including its huge, shifting sand dunes, impressive seal and sea lion colonies, and migrating whales.
