Tel Aviv, Israel

Burning up a lot of energy in Tel Aviv is an easy thing to do with its long stretches of beach and profound history to explore. It’s a relief knowing that there’s plenty of tasty sustenance for vegetarians in the city. Bite into a crispy falafel served with crunchy salads and tahini, scooping it all up in fluffy pita bread.

Bangkok, Thailand

Bangkok is foodie heaven, even for vegetarians. There’s a whole host of stir fried vegetables and tofu in this Buddhist-based nation. Order a noodle dish (there are many) mixed with a healthy green called Morning Glory. It kind of looks like spinach, but has a stronger and very delicious taste. A word of caution: although a menu items may seem meat-free (like papaya salad) it often has fish sauce. Be sure to ask your Ker & Downey guide for a few Thai phrases to inform the restaurant that you are vegetarian.

Kerala India Travel Food And Spices

India

This is one country known world-over as being extra vegetarian friendly. Slurp back one (or two, or three…) pani puris-tiny fried wheat shells filled with spicy water, chickpeas, onions, tamarind sauce, and chopped potatoes. Chefs in the iconic Taj Mahal Palace, located steps from the Gateway of India, stir vats of simmering daals: lentils tempered with fragrant spices. You won’t leave even a drop of it on your plate. Ditch the fork and use hot naan bread to transport fiery vegetables to your awaiting mouth.

Foodie Travel Germany

Berlin, Germany

Give schnitzels and bratwurst a break. Surprising to many, Germany is a diverse culinary delight. Boasting the most vegan restaurants in Europe, Berlin has a whole host of options where you can feed your hunger with everything from mock meat burgers to tempeh treats. And that’s not even counting the yummy deserts like vegan cupcakes, washed down with a strong cup of Joe.

San Jose, Costa Rica

With such a lush landscape, it’s no surprise that Costa Rica comes up on our list. Tropical fruits bursting with tangy sweetness abound. Indulge your sweet tooth with coconut ice cream at Tico Revolution, a piping hot wood-fired pizza at the Mercado Escalante, and beautifully mastered vegan and vegetarian cuisine at Ravi. You can taste them all in Barrio Escalante, San Jose’s gastronomic neighborhood.

South Korea

Vegetarian fare is easy to find in South Korea’s calming temples. Because of Buddhist beliefs, the food is not prepared with any animal products except dairy. Healthy mountain herbs and wild greens flavored with beans and mushroom and kelp powders make up the base for many of dishes found in remote mountain temples, known simply as “temple food.” Soups and other meatless meals packed with soy sauce and red pepper are well balanced nutritionally, but aren’t lacking in taste. Be sure to specify that you want vegetarian kimchi, as it is often made with anchovies.
