A part of the Mantis Collection, Sanbona Wildlife Reserve is a luxury hideaway located at the foot of the Waterberg in the heart of the Little Karoo. Over 133,000 acres of undulating mountains and plains, indigenous fauna and flora, rock formations and rock art, and exquisite accommodations make this a landmark destination for luxury travelers. Plus, Sanbona's pledge to preserving the rare, white lion is at its core, making it the only destination in the world where these magnificent animals roam free.

Of the three accommodations found in the Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, Ker & Downey prefers Dwyka Tented Lodge, a secluded village of luxury tents located on land that was once a hunting range for the ancient Khoisan peoples. The dramatic surrounds features a horseshoe-shaped dry ravine and impressive rock formations, many with evidence of the ancient tribes that once roamed the Karoo. The atmosphere inside Sabona Dwyka Tented Lodge is that of pioneering adventure, with nine tents offering the definition of luxury in the Little Karoo, each with its own private veranda and refreshing plunge pool facing outward to the wild. Inside, elegant canvas drapes the ceilings, and en-suite bathrooms boast under-floor heating, twin washbasins, freestanding bathtubs, and outdoor showers.

The main lodge of Sanbona Dwyka Tented Lodge offers every amenity imaginable, including a communal lounge with fireplace and television. Taste the varietals within the impressive wine cellar, sample local and international fare in the main dining room, indulge in a bush treatment within the dedicated Relaxation Retreat, and relax under the stars in the open-air boma.

Magnificent views, panoramic landscapes and towering cliffs, streams and the abundance of trees and indigenous flora—all contribute to Sanbona Wildlife Reserve one of the Western Cape’s most diverse regions. The ever-changing colors of the majestic mountains, scenic passes, rivers, vineyards, and orchards, serve as a playground for unforgettable adventure, whether setting out on game drives to discover the Big Five and the region’s beautiful free-roaming white lions or simply taking in the kaleidoscopic scenery. Whatever the activity, one of the true joys of Sanbona is the freedom from schedules and the world of exciting experiences available during each stay. Game drives, nature walks, bird watching, star gazing, rock art excursions, and even Sanbona boat safaris are all on offer, as is a Kids On Safari program to encourage visiting children to participate in outdoor sports, cultural walks, and complimentary educational activities.
