The Moremi Game Reserve is a breathtaking national park situated on the western side of the Okavango Delta. Notably, it is the oldest protected section of the Okavango Delta in Botswana and covers approximately 40% of the Okavango. In the 1960’s the environment and wildlife were under threat due to hunting. After seeing the impact hunting had on the environment and wildlife, the local BaTawana tribe took steps to conserve the area. As a token of appreciation, the reserve was named after Chief Moremi III and his wife.
While one of the smallest in Botswana, it is still massive in acreage and undeniably diverse. The rich ecosystem is home to the highest concentration of animals throughout southern Africa. The interior delta system is a unique oasis. Each year the annual floods attract large numbers of wildlife and bird species to the watering holes. Endangered species like the cheetah, African wild dog, and lion roam the reserve. With the reintroduction of black and white rhino into the area in the early 2000’s, it’s possible to have a Big 5 safari here too. Additionally, over 500 bird species live among the forest and waters of the reserve. Often referred to as the “Garden of Eden,” Moremi Game Reserve offers spectacular year-round game viewing.
Because of Botswana’s low impact policy, only a few lodges will ever populate the area. Therefore, incredible game sightings feel private and exclusive. Large crowds won’t congregate around top wildlife moments. Both first-time safari-goers and the most seasoned travelers enjoy their experience in the Moremi Game Reserve.
