South African Adventure
Kruger Park Safari & Cape Town Winelands
For Jamie, an African safari is always an exhilarating and unpredictable adventure
The Timeless Magic of an African Safari
As I always say, no matter how many times I visit, I never grow tired of traveling to Africa. Every trip brings fresh discoveries, new landscapes, and unique experiences. Whether it’s meeting fascinating locals or witnessing the raw power of nature everything goes to making each journey as exciting as the first. Even though I have been to Africa more than 16 times, I was thrilled once again to return to South Africa, a land of contrasts, beauty, and unforgettable wildlife encounters.
The Beauty of Cape Town: Where Culture Meets Coastal Splendor
My journey began in Cape Town, one of the most vibrant cities in the world and an essential stop for any traveler heading to South Africa. I spent my first night at the opulent Silo Hotel, a masterpiece of modern architecture towering above the famous V&A Waterfront. As I gazed out of the hotel’s spectacular glass windows, I could see them reflecting the shimmering city lights. Additionally, I found its luxurious rooms and gourmet cuisine made it a true gem of South African hospitality.
An added bonus? The Silo Hotel sits atop the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA). A must-visit for art lovers, the museum houses the largest collection of contemporary African art. It is a feast for the senses and an inspiring way to begin any South African adventure.

Conquering Cape Point
The next day, I embarked on a private Cape Point Tour, a journey through rugged cliffs and breathtaking coastal views. At first, I was skeptical about hiking to the lighthouse. But I pushed myself, and the reward was well worth the effort. At last I reached the top and found the panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean to be awe-inspiring. Added to that and to my delight, I spotted a few whales breeching in the distance. Standing at the tip of the Cape Peninsula, surrounded by nature’s splendor, I felt a deep connection to the land.
Ocean Views & Art at Ellerman House
My second night in Cape Town was at Ellerman House, an elegant boutique hotel overlooking Bantry Bay. With sweeping views of the Atlantic, it’s the kind of place where time slows down. I was particularly impressed by the hotel’s art collection, featuring both classic and contemporary works from South African artists. Furthermore the curated gallery, with pieces rotated seasonally, offers an artistic journey through a century of South African culture.
Savoring the Flavors of the Winelands
No trip to South Africa is complete without visiting the Winelands. Here you'll find award-winning wines, and charming Cape Dutch architecture among breathtaking landscapes. My private guide took me on a full-day wine tour, visiting esteemed estates like Oldenburg, Delaire Graff, and Leeu Estate. All in all while sipping world-class wines amid rolling vineyards and stunning mountain backdrops it made for an unforgettable experience.
I spent two nights at two exclusive properties in Franschhoek, a picturesque town filled with boutiques and cozy cafes. My first night was at Leeu Estate, an ultra-luxurious property offering refined elegance. And my second was at La Residence, a lavish retreat with magnificent interiors and spectacular vineyard views. I found that the combination of exquisite wines, delicious cuisine, and breathtaking scenery made this leg of my journey truly magical.

The African Safari Begins: Tswalu Kalahari’s Hidden Treasures
After I indulged in the best of the Winelands, it was time for the next leg of my trip—the African safari. My first stop was Tswalu Kalahari Reserve, a mesmerizing landscape of rugged mountains and vast grasslands. Unlike other reserves, Tswalu does not have elephants. However, what it lacks in elephants, it makes up for in rare and unique wildlife.
Among the highlights were sightings of black-backed jackals, cheetahs, lions, oryx, rhinos, and even the elusive wild dog. Additionally Tswalu is famous for its meerkats. These charismatic creatures fascinated me as they scurried around in search of food. Tswalu is also home to the rare and endangered pangolin, which when spotted, is a magical experience.
The Power of a Great Safari Guide
One of the most important elements of any African safari is the guide. A great guide transforms the experience from ordinary to extraordinary. They share deep knowledge of the land and its wildlife. In fact for me, even after so many safaris, every guide brings new discoveries.
On this trip, I also developed a newfound appreciation for birding. In truth I had never considered myself a birder, but thanks to my guide, I became fascinated by the intricacies of different bird species. And one of the most memorable was the fork-tailed drongo, a master of deception that mimics the distress calls of other birds and even imitates the alarm calls of meerkats!
Unforgettable Wildlife Encounters
Every safari brings unexpected encounters. And this trip was no exception. Luckily I was delighted to see a Hartmann’s mountain zebra, a species I had never encountered before. Unlike plains zebras, the Hartmann’s has a distinctive dewlap (a fold of skin under the throat) and stripes that do not wrap around its belly. In the end, it’s these small details, that are pointed out by my guide, that help me appreciate the diversity of African wildlife even more.
Another unforgettable moment was witnessing a giraffe bending down to drink from a waterhole—an incredibly special sight. For photographers, moments like these are pure gold. They help capture the delicate balance of grace and survival in the wild.
Into Greater Kruger: The Heart of Safari Country
The final leg of my journey took me to Sabi Sand Game Reserve and Kruger National Park. I stayed at several luxury safari lodges, including Singita Lebombo, Sabi Sabi Little Bush Camp, and Singita Ebony. Each offered a different experience of the African wilderness.
Finally, I spent my last night at Jabulani in Kapama Private Game Reserve, a camp close to my heart because of its focus on elephant conservation. Jabulani is home to a resident herd of elephants, offering guests an intimate opportunity learn about these gentle giants up close. It was the perfect way to end an extraordinary journey—surrounded by the majesty of Africa’s most iconic animals and my personal favorites.

Why Every Safari is Unique
People often ask me how I can go on safari so many times and still find them exciting. My answer? No two safaris are ever the same. Every day brings a new surprise. Whether it’s an unexpected animal sighting, an awe-inspiring sunset, or the thrill of tracking a predator, every safari tells a different story. And each one leaves me hankering after her next African safari!
