Tintswalo Atlantic enjoys a privileged location – on a pebbled beach at the base of Chapman’s Peak on the coast of Hout Bay. From there, you can see Sentinel mountain peak, a panoramic view of Hout Bay, and the Atlantic Ocean beyond.
To get there from Cape Town International Airport, you pass through the quaint streets of Cape Town, down a winding road that hugs the coast of Hout Bay and into Table Mountain National Park. It’s a breathtaking entrance as you make your way down to the pebbled coast.
I visited Tintswalo Atlantic in 2013.
It was a beautiful property. The rooms faced the bay, framed by large windows.
I had dinner with owners Ernest and Gaye while I was there and remember their excitement and passion as they talked about their three properties (Tintswalo Waterfall, Tintswalo Atlantic, and Tintswalo Safari Lodge) over a delicious dinner. Not only was I filled with admiration for the couple afterwards, but I was stuffed. The food was incredible.
I’ll confess, I spend a lot of time reading news articles and press releases. I remember the moment I found out that Tintswalo Atlantic was burning to the ground in March 2015. I was saddened. A wildfire swept across the Cape Peninsula destroying much of the landscape, ancient milkwood trees, and most of the iconic hotel.
But Ernest and Gaye didn’t let the fire destroy them. They vowed to rebuild Tintswalo Atlantic by the end of the year. And that’s just what they did. In fact, they even opened ahead of schedule.
In May 2016, Ker & Downey Operations Director Vanessa visited the rebuilt Tintswalo Atlantic. I was happy to hear from her that it is just as stunning after the rebuild as it was before.
Tintswalo Atlantic has been completely rebuilt up to the St. Marie Suite, with everything past the St. Marie refurbished. Like before, all rooms are unique and individually decorated by Gaye. While many of the ancient milkwood trees were destroyed in the fire, the team was able to salvage some for reuse in the bar stools, dining table, and new bar. In addition, hundreds of new trees have also been replanted.
