Zambia
A South Luangwa National Park Walking Safari

Take in Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park on foot with expert guides. Walk safely between three intimate bush camps with a highly trained escort, and get up close and personal with even the smallest creatures of the African bush. This classic walking safari in Zambia has something for everyone. From birders and photographers to active travelers seeking an adventurous experience, let Ker & Downey plan the perfect safari for you.

Begin your Zambia walking safari with a meet and greet at Lusaka Airport and a regional flight to Mfuwe. Once there, lodge staff will collect you at the airstrip for the road transfer to Mfuwe Lodge. This stunning lodge is famous for the elephants that walk through reception between late October and mid-December to feast on wild mangoes. The lodge also features a spectacular photography studio, great for editing photos in peace and quiet. Finally, it offers a spa where you can refresh after a long flight — or several days of bush walking.

Your guide will take you by road to your next stop on this Zambia walking safari, Chamilandu. This intimate bush camp is open from June to October and offers just three treehouse-style chalets overlooking the Luangwa River. Its privileged location near seven oxbow lagoons makes it a prime spot for spotting thirsty wildlife. The camp also offers a hide looking out over one of the lagoons, perfect for enjoying the elephants bathing nearby.

Continuing on, depart with your guide and escort scout on a four-hour walk through the riverine bush to Chindeni. This beautiful tented camp on the edge of an oxbow lagoon has only four tents and is open May to December. While walking activities are the main draw for all camps featured in this classic walking safari in Zambia, each bush camp also offers game drives, night drives, and other traditional safari experiences.

The next stop on your journey is the gorgeous Bilimungwe, which you will reach on foot with your guide and escort after a three-and-a-half-hour walk. This bush camp’s four thatched chalets are open May to December and offer private decks from which to enjoy the Zambian bush symphony. Additionally, the expansive lounge area receives shade from a huge mahogany tree and overlooks a secluded waterhole.

On the penultimate day of your Zambia walking safari, return to Mfuwe Lodge via a game drive transfer. Back at the lodge, relax in the spa with a special treatment for sore legs. Additionally, check out one of their community projects in Mfuwe town and learn how your safari supports local people’s health and education needs. Your last morning can be spent at leisure. Alternatively, it may include a final game drive depending on your flight’s departure time. A regional flight will take you from Mfuwe to Lusaka, where several international airlines offer convenient connections onward. If time allows, Ker & Downey recommends an extension to Livingstone where you can spend time at the gorgeous Victoria Falls, “the smoke that thunders.”
