A Zambia walking safari through the country’s pristine wilderness is the ideal way to explore South Luangwa and Liuwa Plain national parks.

Zambia is the birthplace of the walking safari. At a time when safari-goers were heading to Africa in search of big game trophies, Norman Carr pioneered the idea of a photographic safari instead of a hunting safari in the South Luangwa National Park. On Ker & Downey’s 10-day Zambia Walking Safari, you’ll explore the pristine wilderness of South Luangwa and Liuwa Plain national parks in an authentic walking adventure.

Your Zambia walking safari begins in South Luangwa National Park, an area that hosts an immense density of wildlife. It’s also an area largely unexplored by tourists, preserving it as a pristine wilderness. There are few roads in the park, so most of the exploring is done on foot. While in the South Luangwa National Park, you’ll split your nights between Luwi Bush Camp and Nsolo Bush Camp. While at Luwi Bush Camp, you’ll have the opportunity to participate in the exclusive Return to the Wild overnight walking safari, spending a night under Africa’s spectacular canopy of stars at a camp pitched in the Luwi dry riverbed.

The area surrounding Nsolo Bush Camp is predator territory, with various lion prides, wild dog dens, and wandering leopards overlapping their routes along the dry riverbeds. It makes for a thrilling walking safari.

After exploring the South Luangwa area, you’ll head to Liuwa Plain National Park in the remote reaches of Zambia. It’s a hidden wilderness that plays host to the second largest wildebeest migration in Africa. You’ll spend four nights at Matamanene Camp, the only safari camp within the park. It was originally a researchers’ camp – a function it retains throughout the majority of the year. It recently came under the purview of Norman Carr Safaris and has since seen a significant face lift in both standard comforts and safari offerings. Despite its refurbishments, the original spirit of Matamanene still remains intact in its simple amenities, back-to-nature charm, and remote setting that still only sees a handful of dedicated safari enthusiasts each year.

Liuwa is also renowned for its famous matriarch, Lady Liuwa, and her growing lion pride, as well as its clans of up to 50 hyenas, wild dog packs, buffalo herds, significant zebra and red lechwe populations, and more than 300 rare bird species. Brand new land rovers transport guests on game drives and for the adventurous, new walking safari routes allow you to get up close to the wildlife alongside experienced guides.

Ker & Downey’s Zambia Walking Safari starts at $9,970 per person, based on double occupancy and excluding airfare. For more information about the Zambia Walking Safari, please contact your Luxury Travel Consultant.
