Luxury Hotels in India
Our Favorite Places to Stay
India has always understood the art of hospitality. Long before the word "luxury" entered the travel lexicon, maharajas were receiving guests in palaces of breathtaking scale, nomadic tribes were welcoming strangers into their homes with warmth that still surprises first-time visitors today, and ancient traditions of care, such as Ayurvedic treatments and fragrant cuisine, were woven into daily life. India's finest hotels don't imitate this heritage. They inhabit it.
These aren’t just India’s most extraordinary places to stay, they are the properties that make a journey to India unlike anything else. This list includes iconic names, intimate camps, heritage properties, and remote retreats that we not only recommend, but love ourselves.
Oberoi New Delhi, Delhi
If Delhi is the gateway to India, then the Oberoi New Delhi is the ideal place to begin. Elegant and quietly grand, it offers the kind of calm that makes the sensory arrival of Delhi feel exhilarating rather than overwhelming. Travel Designer Catherine Brown, whose essay Awakened India traces a journey from Delhi to Varanasi, begins every India trip here. "After a good night's sleep in the quiet retreat of the Oberoi New Delhi," she writes, "I meet my friend and travel partner and take the short flight to Jodhpur." It is that kind of property — a genuine retreat that restores you for the extraordinary days ahead.

SUJÁN The Serai, Jaisalmer
Forty miles from the Pakistan border, at the edge of the Thar Desert, SUJÁN The Serai is one of the most transporting properties in India. Twenty-one tents spread across a landscape of wild indigenous plants, each appointed with rich rugs, teak furnishings, and the kind of considered detail that only a family-owned property achieves. The staff, many of whom have been at the Serai since its opening, bring a warmth and depth of knowledge that no amount of five-star training can replicate.
Days here are built around the desert: sunrise yoga, tours of the organic farm, excursions to the magnificent 12th-century Jaisalmer Fort, one of the world's last living forts and home to more than 4,000 residents , and wandering the bazaars of the old city by tuk-tuk. Evenings belong entirely to The Serai, where the staff has been known to set up outdoor cinema screenings under an ocean of desert stars.

SUJÁN Jawai, Jawai
South of Jodhpur, where billion-year-old granite boulders rise from the plains, lies SUJÁN Jawai, one of the most unusual wildlife destinations in the world. The leopard population here is unique: these cats have coexisted peacefully with the local Rabari tribespeople for generations, hunting at night and retreating to their rocky caves by day, entirely unbothered by the proximity of human life. Tracking them with expert Rabari guides is unlike any other big cat experience on the continent.

The camp's modern tents are adorned with large black-and-white photographs of the resident leopards and the tribespeople who know them by name. A Marwari horse stable, spa, and pool round out the daytime offering. Evenings, however, are where SUJÁN Jawai truly distinguishes itself. As Travel Designer Catherine Brown writes of her stay: "the food is delicious, with close to a thousand candles lighting the pathways and dining area, and telescopes set out to scout the night sky." In the desert silence of Jawai, that is an evening worth traveling a very long way for.

Aman-i-Khás, Ranthambore
Aman-i-Khás, located in the forests surrounding Ranthambore National Park offers an elegant experience. Just ten Mughal-inspired tented pavilions sit within the sanctuary landscape, each a study in understated luxury. Ayurvedic spa treatments, fragrant Indian cuisine prepared from the on-site organic garden, and twice-daily game drives with experienced naturalists make this one of the finest tiger safari camps in the country. Bengal tigers have also been spotted wandering beneath the vine-covered archways of the 10th-century Ranthambore Fort nearby.

Oberoi Amarvilas, Agra
At the Oberoi Amarvilas, every room offers an unobstructed view of the Taj Mahal, one of the world’s most extraordinary structures. The architecture of the hotel draws on Moorish and Mughal traditions with terraced lawns, fountains, reflection pools, and pavilions that transport guests to an era of emperors and princes. Dining beside the silhouette of the Taj Mahal at sunset, or watching the monument emerge from the morning mist from the comfort of your bed, is precisely the kind of experience that Ker & Downey World Travel journeys are built around.

Rambagh Palace, Jaipur
Few hotels wear their royal heritage as naturally as Rambagh Palace, the former private residence of the Maharaja of Jaipur. The original splendor of hand-carved marble latticework, sandstone balustrades, cupolas and cenotaphs, and elaborate Mughal Gardens has been preserved with extraordinary care. Seventy-eight grand rooms and suites occupy the former royal chambers, and every guest is assigned a personal butler on call throughout their stay. The Pink City is best experienced from this address.

Aramness Gir, Gujarat
On the edge of Gir National Park , the last natural habitat of the Asiatic lion, Aramness is the most luxurious base from which to explore one of India's most remote wildlife destinations. The surrounding Kathiawar region feels genuinely timeless: nomadic Maldhari tribes move across the landscape with their livestock, coexisting peacefully with the lions as they have for centuries, the women adorned in silver jewelry and traditional dress. Game drives with expert naturalists venture into Gir's rocky hills and dense forests in search of the resident lion population, as well as Indian gazelle, marsh crocodile, and sloth bear.

BrijRama Palace, Varanasi
Few properties anywhere in the world occupy a location as powerful as BrijRama Palace. Set directly on the banks of the holy Ganges, within a 210-year-old heritage building in the oldest continuously inhabited city on Earth, it offers a front-row experience of Varanasi's extraordinary daily life, such as the morning prayers and ritual bathing at the ghats, the marigold-strewn boats, and the evening aarti fire ceremony that draws thousands of worshippers to the river each night.
Arrival is marked with a henna treatment and foot massage; guests receive mala beads and caraway cookies as a welcome gift. Dining is vegetarian and alcohol-free, in keeping with the spiritual customs of the Ganges, and the waterfront dining room is exceptional. This is not a hotel that competes with its setting. It surrenders to it entirely.
