Standing atop Mount Kilimanjaro is an unforgettable achievement. For many travelers, it is their first high-altitude expedition and the beginning of a lifelong passion for mountain adventure. But behind every successful summit is a team of dedicated professionals whose work often goes unseen. 

Porters are the backbone of every Kilimanjaro expedition. They carry equipment, prepare camps, cook meals, transport supplies, and make it possible for trekkers to focus on the journey ahead. Their knowledge of the mountain and unwavering support shape the experience from the first day on the trail to the final descent. Beyond their logistical expertise, many also share stories, traditions, and local knowledge that create a deeper connection to Tanzania and its people. 

Unfortunately, not every Kilimanjaro operator provides the fair working conditions these mountain crews deserve. With hundreds of trekking companies operating on the mountain, standards can vary significantly. Choosing an operator that prioritizes ethical employment practices is one of the most meaningful decisions a traveler can make before arriving in Tanzania. 

Setting the Standard for Responsible Trekking 

To help improve working conditions on Kilimanjaro, the Kilimanjaro Responsible Trekking Organization (KRTO), formerly known as the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP), was established to advocate for fair treatment, transparency, and accountability throughout the trekking industry. 

KRTO works with approved operators that commit to ethical employment standards, including: 

The organization also conducts independent monitoring through porter interviews, salary audits, and field evaluations to ensure these standards continue to be upheld. 

Since its founding, KRTO has helped improve working conditions for thousands of porters through educational programs, equipment lending initiatives, first aid training, and advocacy efforts that continue to strengthen the future of responsible trekking on Kilimanjaro. 

Since its inception, KRTO has significantly improved the lives of Kilimanjaro porters. Porters on 37,478 expeditions have borrowed KRTO's mountain climbing gear free of charge. Each year, more than 7,000 porters benefit from fair wages and ethical employment standards, while more than 16,000 porters and guides have participated in free education programs. More than 5,000 porters have been trained to understand and advocate for their rights in the workplace, 1,100+ porters are certified in Leave No Trace principles, and 1,300+ guides and porters have received first aid certification.
