Matakauri Lodge’s 12 stunning rooms and suites were composed by celebrated interior designer Virginia Fisher using a color palette of warm grey and straw yellow, and large floor-to-ceiling windows to create inviting modern spaces. Each features all of the amenities for a home-away-from-home stay, including an open fireplace, flatscreen television, private balcony, CD and DVD player, and a refreshing minibar. Guests may choose from either the four suites attached to the main lodge or the eight outlying cottages located on the Wakatipu lakefront with spectacular views of the mountains beyond. The stylish Owner’s Cottage is perfect for families or friends traveling together, with such exclusive luxuries as a private Jacuzzi, lounge, kitchen, grand courtyard, and remarkable views from the bathtubs.

The main lodge is a sanctuary within the already peaceful surroundings, with comfortable furnishings and cozy open fireplaces inviting relaxation. Enjoy nightly drinks with hors d’oeuvres and conversation passed around the lounge ahead of the sumptuous dinners. Matakauri’s modern European menu varies daily and features seasonal produce and freshly caught fish. Luxuriate in the Matakauri Spa’s two private treatment rooms with adjacent decks, or take a dip in the Jacuzzi and heated infinity swimming pool, both of which boast uninterrupted views of Cecil Peak in the distance.

With Lake Wakatipu right at the doorstep, water activities are endless. Explore the lake aboard the vintage steamship TSS Earnslaw or try a hand at fishing. Venture further afield to the Kiwi Birdlife Park to see native birds, or head into Queenstown–just seven minutes away–for  shopping, dining, and sight-seeing. Adventurous guests may choose to take a jet boat down the Shotover or Dart Rivers and ride the gondola to the top of Bob’s Peak for a panoramic view of the city below. Helicopter tours are possible as well, with a flight over Milford Sound a must for any visitor.
