What to Wear: Ten Days on a Uganda Safari

Planning a Uganda safari? Here’s your ultimate packing guide. Check our East Africa Seasonality and Pricing Guide, as you may need extra rain gear or heat-beating essentials depending on the time of year.

Essential Items to Bring on a Uganda Safari Trip

  1. Proper Shoes: The first clothing item of utmost importance are shoes, specifically, shoes that keep you protected. In general, you should wear closed-toed shoes as this prevents bug bites, cuts, or scratches.

    1. If you are planning on including primate trekking in your Uganda Safari, we suggest a sturdy pair of hiking boots with ample ankle support, but also lightweight and easy to pack.

  2. Lightweight Clothing: Stay cool and comfortable on safari with breathable, quick-dry fabrics in neutral colors to blend into the environment. For primate trekking, wear long pants and long sleeves to protect against scratches from dense forest vegetation.

  3. Layers: Daytime temperatures range from 75 to 85°F, but nights can drop to 50 to 60°F, especially at higher elevations. Bring lightweight, easy-to-layer clothing for night or early morning drives.

  4. Rain Gear: Even if you aren’t traveling during the rainy season, Uganda can experience rain any time of year especially in the national parks and forests.

How to Beat the Heat When Visiting For A Uganda Safari

While weather can fluctuate, it does get quite warm during summer months with temperature as high as 85°F. While safari activities usually take place in the early mornings and late afternoons, you can still experience the heat. The best way to beat the heat is by wearing appropriate clothing and preparing accordingly.

  • As previously stated, pack breathable, lightweight clothing items, such as pants, shorts, skirts, dresses, t-shirts, and shoes. Quick-dry or linen clothing is the best.

  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, especially during activities involving prolonged walking. Sip small amounts frequently to maintain proper hydration and prevent overheating, dehydration, or exhaustion. Avoid drinking large quantities at once, as this can lead to uneven hydration levels.

  • Bring a wide-brimmed hat that will protect your head and neck from the sun. Similarly, strong sunglasses will provide sufficient UV protection.

  • Lastly, always bring sunscreen. In particular, your sunscreen should be at least SPF 30. Those with more sensitive skin may prefer stronger coverage. This will not only prevent sunburn, it will help your skin stay healthier.
