When to Visit Uganda
The best time to visit Uganda is during the dry seasons (June–September and December–March), which is ideal for primate trekking, especially to see mountain gorillas and chimpanzees. Trails in Kibale National Park and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest during this time are less muddy and more accessible, with pleasant weather and minimal rainfall. Booking gorilla and chimpanzee trekking permits well in advance is crucial due to high demand and limited daily slots.
Shoulder seasons (March to May and October to November) can be wetter, causing trekking conditions to be more challenging, but fewer crowds and lower costs.

What to Do in Uganda
The major draw to Uganda is the once-in-a-lifetime adventure to trek mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, home to nearly half of the world’s remaining gorillas. This UNESCO World Heritage Site also boasts almost 350 bird species, 200 butterfly species, and over 300 tree species, making it a biodiversity hotspot.
For chimp trekking, head to Kibale National Park, renowned for its population of over 1,500 chimpanzees and a high sighting success rate. The park also hosts 12 other primate species, offering a rich primate-watching experience.
Beyond the primates, Uganda’s national parks are teeming with wildlife. Enjoy game drives to spot lions, elephants, bushbucks, Ugandan kob, zebras, impalas, elands, topi, and buffaloes. Visit Queen Elizabeth National Park’s Southern Ishasha sector along the Ntungwe River for its unique tree-climbing lions. The park is also one of East Africa’s premier bird watching destinations, with hundreds of species to observe.
Uganda also has exciting aquatic adventures. Take a scenic boat cruise on Lake Victoria or along the Kazinga Channel, where you’ll see hippos, crocodiles, and a variety of waterbirds. For a thrilling experience, cruise to the base of Murchison Falls, where the Nile River thunders through a narrow gorge, surrounded by wildlife. Adventure seeking travelers can try white water rafting on the Nile River, one of the world’s most exhilarating rafting destinations.
Lastly, discover the stunning volcanic craters at the foothills of the Mountains of the Moon in western Uganda, offering breathtaking landscapes and hiking opportunities. These scenic areas provide a serene backdrop for photography and exploration. Whether you’re trekking primates, spotting big game, or cruising along wildlife-rich waterways, Uganda’s diverse attractions promise an unforgettable adventure.

Why You Should Travel to UgandaWhat to Pack for a Safari in Uganda
For your Uganda trip, pack lightweight, quick-dry, neutral-colored clothing suitable for safaris and hiking. For trekking, wear long trousers and long-sleeved shirts to protect against nettle stings, and sturdy hiking boots (preferred over walking shoes) for wet forest trails. Include compact rain gear for sudden showers. Bringing a camera for wildlife and scenery is a must! Consider packing a small snack and water bottle for treks, but note that eating, drinking, and smoking near primates are prohibited. We suggest hiring a porter for a small fee to carry your day pack—this enhances your trekking experience and supports local communities.
