Discover the magic of an African safari as Ker & Downey's own Haley Beham recounts her thrilling South African adventure.

From awe-inspiring wildlife encounters to unforgettable landscapes, here’s why an African safari should be on everyone’s bucket list.

The Untamed Excitement of an African Safari

Nothing compares to the exhilaration of an African safari. Imagine starting your day in the crisp morning air, seated in the back of an open vehicle, camera in hand, and a warm blanket draped over you if it’s chilly. Whether it’s your first or seventeenth safari, the anticipation is palpable. You find yourself wondering: What will I see today? Each drive into the wilderness feels like opening a gift, brimming with possibilities and surprises.

My South African Safari Journey Begins

After nine long years away from the bush, I was eager to return to a place that feels like home. And so my South Africa safari itinerary began with stays at luxurious properties like Tintswalo Atlantic, Birkenhead House, and La Residence.

La Residence, nestled in the beautiful Franschhoek Valley among lush vineyards, was a highlight. Previously voted as one of the best small hotels in the world by Condé Nast readers, it truly lived up to its reputation. From its opulent design to its warm hospitality, every moment there felt magical.

The African Wilderness Calls

After exploring some of South Africa’s incredible landscapes, I finally headed into the bush on my luxury African safari. My destinations included Royal Malewane, Tintswalo Safari Lodge, and Londolozi Varty Camp.

Upon landing in the Thornybush Game Reserve, part of the Greater Kruger area, the familiar sights and smells of the bush instantly brought back memories. The crisp air mixed with the earthy scent of dust and wildlife is unforgettable. Stepping off the plane and onto the dry ground, I felt an overwhelming sense of excitement and nostalgia.

Diverse Wildlife Encounters: Playful Lion Cubs

Each game drive offered unique experiences and an abundance of wildlife. I encountered zebras, giraffes, elephants, lions with their playful cubs, and even a massive herd of buffalo numbering around 500. Observing lions is always special. Despite their powerful roars and regal presence, seeing cubs playfully rolling in the grass or nibbling on their mother’s ear offers a heartwarming contrast. And it’s moments like these that remind you of the complexity of nature – fierce yet tender, majestic yet sociable.

Stealthy Leopards

Leopards were another highlight. While they were always on the move, spotting one never lost its charm. Their stealth and elegance make them a fascinating sight. By the time I reached Londolozi, I had seen nearly every animal on my list except for the cheetah, which became my top priority. The anticipation of seeing a cheetah was electric, and I hoped to witness their speed and grace firsthand.

The Awe of Spotting a Cheetah on an African Safari

Londolozi Private Game Reserve, located in Sabi Sand, is known for its well-informed guides who share information about animal sightings. Upon arrival, my guide asked what I hoped to see. Without hesitation, I said, “Cheetah.” Although he promised to try, he later admitted feeling uncertain since no cheetahs had been spotted for days.

We began our drive, stopping briefly to admire elephants, rhinos, and warthogs. Then, as if by magic, we found a cheetah mother and her two adolescent cubs resting under a tree. I was ecstatic! Watching them peacefully lying in the shade was mesmerizing. For a moment, I forgot to use my camera.

The sight of their sleek bodies and the way they blended effortlessly with their surroundings was extraordinary. Later, one cub stood to stretch and practice hunting.  He stalked some nearby plains game. And although unsuccessful, it was a treat to witness his efforts. This glimpse into their lives left me with a lump in my throat.

A Morning of Unforgettable Adventure

On my final day, I faced a dilemma: should I skip the morning game drive to prepare for my journey home, or seize one last opportunity? Despite a tight schedule, I chose the latter—a decision I’ll never regret. Each game drive on safari in South Africa offers something new, and the possibility of a surprise encounter was too tempting to pass up.

That morning, my guide set out with a mission to find leopard cubs. While we bypassed other animals along the way, an hour passed without success. Growing anxious, I stayed in the vehicle as my guide and tracker searched for prints on foot. Time was running out, and disappointment loomed. And the silence of the bush heightened my anticipation, and I scanned the area intently, hoping for a sign.

An Incredible Farewell: Spotting a Leopard cub

Just as we were about to head back, I spotted something unusual: a distinctive pattern on a fallen tree trunk. Excited, I alerted my guide. Reversing the vehicle, we discovered a leopard cub gazing at us. Nearby, its sibling played in the riverbed.

Watching the cub climb a tree was the perfect ending to my safari. In truth it was one of the most rewarding and unforgettable experiences of my trip. The young leopard’s curiosity and playfulness offered a rare glimpse into its world, leaving me with memories I’ll treasure forever.

The Soul of the Bush

Every game drive is unique, but the thrill of searching for elusive animals leaves a lasting impression. Thus the African bush has a way of embedding itself in your soul, leaving you changed forever. It’s not just the animals or the landscapes but the entire experience – the sounds of the wilderness, the stories shared around the campfire, and the sense of being part of something timeless. Part of my heart will always remain in Africa, among its incredible wildlife.

The Transformative Power of a Luxury African Safari

Beyond the excitement and beauty, a luxury African safari offers moments of reflection and connection. And watching animals in their natural habitat reminds you of the delicate balance of ecosystems and the importance of conservation. It’s humbling to witness the raw power of a lion, the grace of a giraffe, or the playful antics of a warthog. Moreover these moments bring a profound appreciation for nature’s wonders and inspire a deeper commitment to protecting them.

Traveling through South Africa also gave me a chance to connect with its people. The guides, trackers, and lodge staff shared their passion and knowledge, enriching every experience. Furthermore their dedication to preserving wildlife and their genuine warmth made the trip even more special. Consequently I have memories that will stay with me for the rest of my life.
