Property Details
A variety of accommodations await guests of Amangalla, each unique in design and featuring views of the 200-year-old gardens, the fort’s unique architecture, and the harbor beyond. Dating to 1694, the hotel’s building was constructed exclusively for occupation by the Dutch Governor and his staff. In the mid-19th century it was christened the New Orient Hotel and hosted guests traveling between Europe and Galle. This history translates into the rooms of today, all being fitted both with original antiques and masterful reproductions of period pieces. Shining Burma teak flooring, thoughtful artworks, and rich textures of mahogany and rattan are also reflected throughout the resort. Guests may wish to opt for the spacious two-bedroom Amangalla Suite, ideal for families or traveling couples, or take advantage of extra privacy and a personal butler in the splendid two-story Garden House.
The Dining Room is an inspiring colonial space perfect for enjoying hearty breakfasts, refreshing lunches, and intimate dinners. A meal here is a total sensory experience with the flavors and colors of Sri Lankan curries and from-scratch dishes sampled with antique silverware in hand. Guests may also dine at the Zaal, or Great Hall, which offers snacks and light meals under high ceilings adorned with period-style ceiling fans and chandeliers. Venture into the gardens to take a dip in the swimming pool or luxuriate in a private shaded cabana. Guests may also practice yoga and meditation in a tranquil corner of the gardens.
Amangalla’s spa, named The Baths, is a welcoming retreat specializing in custom Ayurveda treatments, massages, and beauty services. Beyond the resort, the hexagonal-shaped fort city is teeming with life along narrow streets, waiting for visitors to browse the artisanal shops, fly a kite from atop the seawall with the harbor as the backdrop, or simply take a stroll and marvel at the unique architecture of this historic destination.
