Planning Your Uganda Safari: Seasonal Highlights and The Best Time To Go
Planning a vacation, wherever you may go, first requires figuring out which destinations to visit. However, equally important is choosing the perfect time to go. For example, a Uganda safari offers different highlights throughout the year, giving visitors the opportunity to select particular seasons based on their preferences.
When to Go on a Uganda Safari: Seasonal Highlights
Due to its location on the equator, Uganda does not have the traditional four seasons. There are two dry seasons (December to February and June to August) and two wet seasons (March to May and September to November). Depending on your interests, certain seasons may be more intriguing to you than others.
The first dry season, December through February, is an exciting time in Uganda and is the most popular time to travel. Christmas is a major holiday, so partake in local holiday activities such as delightful religious festivals and delicious feasts. You should try the traditional dishes such as luwombo, meat steamed in banana leaves, and matoke, cooked green bananas served with stew.
The wet season from March to May provides plenty of rain and thunderstorms. While this weather may seem an obstacle for some, in reality it creates a fantastic scope of rich and beautiful vegetation - perfect for scenic safaris. This is also the best season for bird watching, with over 300 species present in Uganda.
Once the rainfall stops, a new dry season occurs between June and August. Unlike other locations, temperatures cool down a bit during this season. With easier (drier) terrain, this time of the year is best for primate trekking.
Finally, between September and November, the heavy rainfall starts again, oftentimes with significant downpours. Yet, this is another perfect season for bird watching, with many species returning from migration.
It is important to note that there are year-round activities such as gorilla trekking and game viewing safaris. However, certain seasons, particularly those with cooler temperatures, have more active wildlife.
Which Time is Best For You?
While a Uganda safari is beautiful throughout the year, certain seasons may be more enjoyable. By learning more about different climates and conditions, you can make a better decision of when to travel.
Traveling between December and February in Uganda is not the same as in other high altitude countries. While you may be accustomed to colder temperatures and conditions, Uganda is different. December begins the hottest two-month period in Uganda, with temperatures reaching up to 90 degrees Fahrenheit. For those who enjoy warmer weather, particularly individuals from cold-weather locations, visiting Uganda at this time of year is certainly a worthwhile experience.
If you prefer to travel in the wet March to May season, you will see more rain and slightly cooler temperatures. The phrase, “April showers bring May flowers” is appropriate, as greater precipitation leads to blooming flowers and lush, green plants. This time of year tends to be less crowded than the other seasons, which is perfect for those who prefer a more quiet experience to connect with nature.
Visiting Uganda in the mid-year dry season brings drier conditions and warm temperatures. It is often referred to as “peak safari” season as wildlife is the most present during this time. In particular, you will have the best chance of seeing tree-climbing lions and mountain gorillas.
Travelers visiting from September to November will experience significant rain and more tumultuous weather. This season is best for experienced explorers who don’t mind challenging conditions with fewer tourists.
