Mauritius is a small island off the eastern coast of Madagascar. The island’s climate is tropical, mollified by a gentle southeasterly trade wind. First discovered by Arab sailors, the island was once a dense tropical forest. Strangely, though uninhabited, the island was considered uninhabitable by its first discoverers.
The island was re-discovered by the Portugese in 1505 then subsequently held by the Dutch, French and British before its independence. The Dutch inhabited the island in 1598, founding an important port and doing irreversible damage to the indigenous flora and fauna. In 1710 they abandoned the island and 5 years later the French settled it. During this time they also founded the port city of Port Louis which also serves as the capital. For nearly 100 years, the island flourished under French rule. Finally, during the Napoleonic Wars, the British rested the island from the French, holding it until its independence.
By all accounts, Grand Bay is the hub of the island. Both travelers and the local population head to Grand Bay when they seek a fun night out. Recently renovated, the new La Cuvette beach is fantastic. Further, the Balaclava Ruins – named after the many tortoises in the area – stand as a fabulous example of of 17th century European maritime life. On the eastern side of the island, Ile aux Cerfs is a watersports paradise and has one of the most beautiful beaches on this islands. Of course, those seeking a more cost efficient adventure would be well advised to bring their own refreshments as the only bar and restaurant on the beach is for the most discerning travelers.
Oberoi Mauritius is a sprawling luxury hotel spanning 20 acres and featuring over 650 yards of oceanfront beauty. Each villa has its own private swimming pool and luxury pavilion offering panoramic views of the ocean. Marble bathrooms – predominately featuring sunken tubs – overlook private walled gardens for the visitors pleasure. Further, each room features romantic four poster beds with wooden slated ceilings and peaceful neutral colors.
Of note, the Royal Villas offer an entirely different type of opulence from that of the regular luxury variety. Royal Villas are exclusive retreats with unimpeded ocean views. Each one features a private garden with a large pool, dining pavilions and separate areas for dining and reclining.
The restaurant at the Oberoi specializes in European, Oriental and Creole cuisine. Guests dine in the comfortable indoor dining room or the lovely veranda beneath the night sky.
In a review on TripAdvisor a couple reviews the Oberoi Mauritius saying:
It is such a tranquil, beautiful place, the rooms are spacious, clean and modern, the staff were amazing, the food was lovely, the facilities were great and the grounds were large and very well maintained. We never felt crowded.
The service was impeccable and very personal but not obtrusive.
It is a very quiet hotel and that is exactly what we wanted, we were so well looked after by all the staff especially in the restaurant.
Nothing was too much trouble, the chef came out and spoke to us regularly, we had special meals whenever we wanted (with notice of course). The menu rotated every 3/4 days so there was plenty of choice.
We loved the breakfast, the croissants and omelettes have left a lasting impression!
The evening meals were always to a high standard and beautifully cooked. The restaurant and the bar are beautiful buildings, the height of the ceilings are so impressive. The flowers were lovely and changed regularly.
We loved our stay here and will definitely come back and visit other hotels in the Oberoi family.
We did visit the One and only and found it rather gauche, very busy and not in any way to the standard of the Oberoi.
If you are looking for a peaceful romantic holiday this is the place.
