Itinerary Description:
Trek with Ker & Downey deep into the most celebrated landscapes of Africa on this multi-country journey, where a wild cast of characters awaits.
Your experience starts in Odzala-Kokoua National Park—one of Africa’s oldest—where you will experience a true and raw African safari. Not many travelers get this far, but they are missing out on the close encounters with western lowland gorillas and other forest-dwellers unique to this part of Africa. This massive pocket of the Republic of Congo is a vital lung of the planet; this is the world’s second largest tropical rainforest after the Amazon. See elephants gathering in the clearings and tiny remote villages where you will witness a simpler way of life.
Next, you will head to Rwanda to continue your Grand African Safari. Start with a day of rest in Kigali, a city of rebirth and hope, before hitting the road to Nyungwe Forest National Park. On the way, stop at the National Museum of Rwanda to learn about the tribal, royal, and colonial history of the country.
Nyungwe Forest National Park is a nature lover’s paradise. Walks, birding expeditions, and primate tracking with skilled local guides gives you a rare opportunity to come across wild families. Chances here are high, since there are 14 different species of primates in the area, including chimpanzees.
Travel onwards to the iconic Volcanoes National Park, starting the day with a cup of strong Rwandan coffee. The verdant Rwandan hills produce some of the most robust and flavorful beans. One of the most thrilling Rwandan experiences is gorilla trekking. Researcher Dian Fossey dedicated her life to studying these majestic creatures. Depending on the season, you will find gorillas on higher or lower elevations. The long hikes are worth it for the opportunity to get close to these remarkable creatures.
Explore Tanzania, the last country on the Grand African Safari. First fly to Rubondo Island in the southwest corner of Lake Victoria, the second largest lake in the world. Join a ranger for drive through the trees looking for elephants, hippos, and giraffes. Boating and fishing will also fill your days on Rubondo; the birdlife is plentiful and varied.
Travel onwards to the Serengeti which cannot be missed on a journey to Tanzania. Sayari Camp places you in a prime location for game viewing along its grasslands, marshes, and riverbeds populated by lions, leopards, and cheetahs.
End your Grand African Safari in the Mahale Mountains National Park, home to the world’s largest population of chimpanzees. And that’s not all: leopards and red-tailed monkeys will be on your radar too. Grab your camera and binoculars because there’s a lot to see.
A Grand African Safari is just right for an adventure-seeking traveler wanting to witness Africa’s rich and varied landscapes and creatures. Make this journey your own by customizing it with your Ker & Downey designer.
