Whispers of the Wild: My Unforgettable Hour with Uganda's Mountain Gorillas on Safari

As humans, we often don’t realize or appreciate the brilliance or magnificence of other creatures. This is why traveling on a Uganda safari can not only be grounding, but also inspiring. Specifically, trekking to see the mountain gorillas of Uganda is undoubtedly rewarding. The mountain gorillas are wonderful animals with otherworldly strength and stunning intellect.

Everything to Know about Mountain Gorillas on a Uganda Safari

Seeing mountain gorillas on a Uganda safari is truly a highlight. These stunning creatures display impressive intellect, awe-inspiring strength, and endearing personalities.

First off, trying to find these majestic animals can be quite difficult. Unfortunately, mountain gorillas are an endangered species, so for many, the journey to find them is part of the adventure. Once you finally see them, it makes the exploration fully worthwhile.

Typically, Uganda mountain gorillas can be found in two locations - Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. The larger gorilla population lives in Bwindi, and therefore, more of the gorilla trekking takes place there.

Mountain gorillas live at high elevation and can reside 8,000-13,000 feet above sea level. This elevation is most comparable to Mount Hood in Oregon or Granite Peak in Montana. For those not accustomed to such heights, your body may need to adjust to lower oxygen levels and air pressure.

Here are some fun facts about mountain gorillas:

  • They are incredibly strong! Male mountain gorillas can weigh up to 396 lbs and easily carry over 1000 lbs.

  • Mountain gorillas aren’t only strong, they are fast. Due to their nature and physical composition, these animals can showcase brilliant speed and agility in quick bursts.

  • Their speed may suggest that they are expert hunters. However that isn’t the case. Mountain gorillas are primarily herbivores, mostly eating fruits, leaves, and bamboo shoots.

The Importance of Mountain Gorillas on a Uganda Safari

When you are ready to plan a Uganda safari, Ker & Downey World Travel can assist you throughout the entire planning process. From securing permits and private ground transportation to the perfect lodge to suit your desires, our travel designers create unique itineraries for each traveler.

What’s more, your safari supports the continued existence of mountain gorillas and other species in Uganda. In fact, mountain gorillas play an important role both environmentally and economically. Since many travelers enjoy trekking to see mountain gorillas, tours to see these beautiful creatures generate revenue that help support the local economy.

Conversely, mountain gorillas help maintain their surroundings and other animals. Since they are an endangered species, any conservation investment supports nearby animals as well. Lastly, mountain gorillas consume large quantities of food, anywhere from 30-75 lbs per day. This helps maintain biodiversity; in particular, seed dispersal allows for different vegetation to grow in various locations. In many ways, mountain gorillas are the unknowing overseers of their environment, ensuring necessary natural order.

Your safari will contribute to the survival of Uganda’s wildlife, which is a very rewarding reason to travel. “Bwindi Impenetrable Forest” is true to its name. The thick brush only allowed spots of sun to shine through. Guides had to machete a path to find the gorillas.

Amy Silverback Uganda Safari

"It was so quiet in the forest, all I could hear was the rustling of the leaves from two hungry baby gorillas. To hear a gorilla grunt from ten feet away sends a certain kind of chill down your spine.

Being up close to a wild silverback was like nothing I’ve experienced. I couldn’t look away, mesmerized by his size, fur, facial expressions, and his complete lack of interest in us. How are we able to get so close?

The excitement of seeing a gorilla for the first time was something I will never forget.” - Amy Willis, Graphic Designer
