Diwali illuminates India every year with color and celebrations. The festival is deeply rooted in several Hindu stories that are exuberantly brought to life across the country in many ways. India is always a lively feast for the senses, but visiting during Diwali will bring you even closer to the rich culture of this historic land.

Lights

Homes are decorated head to toe with small oil lamps called diyas. The spiritual meaning is to light up one’s thoughts and actions with good deeds and to clean thoughts and banish darkness. Fireworks burst in the sky and children happily wave sparklers. Diwali, the festival of lights, lives up to its moniker.

Rangoli

To welcome good luck, happiness, and prosperity, families decorate the entrances of their homes with vibrant patterns called rangolis. The patterns created with flowers, seeds, or colored powders, vary in size. Rangolis usually include religious symbols, floral patterns, and plant designs. Diwali is a time for new beginnings and growth.

Style

On Diwali, families get up early to pray and dress up in their newest and best outfits. Slender wrists clink with the sounds of pretty glass bangles. Indian fashion is never dull, but on Diwali you will see the latest collections in storefronts and on the streets. We dare you to try to peel your eyes and hands off the glass windows of the sari stores. Shop in a designer boutique where an assistant will elegantly wrap you in a beaded sari.

Food During Diwali

Sugar and spice and everything nice is prepared in mothers’ kitchens, restaurants, and luxury hotels across the land. India’s cuisine is so varied, but one thing it has in common across the board is its flavor punch. Diwali is a sweet lover’s treat. Milky deserts called barfi are topped with chopped nuts and chocolate. The scent of deep-fried crispy snacks fills the air, leading your nose to the next street spot where you can eagerly fill your belly.

Temples

Punjab’s Golden Temple shines on Diwali. Sikh worshipers flock to this religious shrine in Amritsar to pay their respects. Hindu temples from Rajasthan to Kerala are also aglow. There’s an infectious optimistic spirit in the air for Diwali. People embrace and smile, leaving aside their past grievances with the hope of a fresh new year ahead.
