Discover the Ngorongoro Crater
The Cradle of Life in Tanzania
The world-famous Ngorongoro Crater Area lies at the eastern edge of the Serengeti just west of Arusha in northwest Tanzania. The region—named a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its superlative-inducing natural wonders—occupies 102 square miles of pristine African wilderness including the crowning jewel of Ngorongoro Crater. This is the world’s largest un-flooded volcanic caldera. It was formed approximately two to three million years ago when a volcano exploded and fell into itself to create a huge depression some 2,000 feet deep. The blue-green vistas from its unbroken walls are as dramatic as they come, but the real magic happens when you venture down inside its boundaries. There you'll find one of the world’s most unchanged wildlife sanctuaries on a Tanzania safari.
The Ngorongoro Crater plays host to almost every individual species of wildlife in East Africa. An estimated 25,000 animals live within the crater. This unparalleled concentration of wildlife virtually guarantees sightings of zebra, gazelle, and wildebeest herds, as well as the marvelous Big Five of rhino, lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo on a Tanzania safari. The caldera also boasts around 30 endangered black rhino and the highest density of predators in all of Africa, setting the stage for natural drama to unfold as prey and predators graze and stalk through the open grasslands, swamps, and acacia woodland on the crater floor. The primary reason for all of this abundance in the Ngorongoro Crater is the presence of water, both from the permanent Ngoitoktok Springs and the rivers fed by run off from the crater rim’s forests. Their life-giving sustenance ensures that hippos and flamingos alike benefit from the idyllic setting.
Beyond the wildlife, what makes the Ngorongoro Conservation Area so unique is its careful multi-use balance between man and nature. It is the only conservation area in Tanzania that protects wildlife while also allowing human habitation—currently the Maasai pastoralists. Based on fossil evidence, various humans have occupied the Ngorongoro ecosystem for upwards of three million years. It is the conservation’s belief that through careful research and respectful tourism, they can continue to do so for millions more to come.
Where to Stay on a Luxury Tanzania Safari in the Ngorongoro Crater Area:
Entamanu Ngorongoro
Entamanu Ngorongoro in Tanzania is a marvelous luxury tented option for Ngorongoro Crater safari excursions. Designed to be completely temporary, each tent rests on timber platforms and is surrounded by canvas.
This luxury Tanzania camp rests on the less-traveled—and some even say “wild”—eastern side of the crater. Views from the deck of each suite overlook the rim to the crater floor beyond. Look out to the north and west toward where the vast plains of the Serengeti begin and the Olduvai Gorge winds its way through the landscape.
Gibb's Farm
Exuding rustic charm and natural beauty, Gibb's Farm is the perfect retreat on the edge of the Ngorongoro Crater Area. Gibb’s Farm is a working farm, boasting an on-site dairy and acres of organic produce, herbs, and coffee. Built in 1929, the main farmhouse retains its original architectural details. You'll see exposed trusses, adzed beams, wooden ceilings, ironwork, and old stone fireplaces throughout its living room, two dining rooms, and bar.
Unique in theme and decoration, each of the cottages at Gibb’s Farm in Tanzania is as spacious as it is relaxing. Stunning bucolic details of eucalyptus floors, bespoke furnishings, and exposed natural stone is highlighted further by the generous floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the abundant plants, birds, and wildlife of the Ngorongoro setting. At each accommodation, private patios house outdoor showers, personalized themes are executed by the farm’s artists-in-residence, and cozy fireplaces in the living rooms make for the perfect end to a day in the wild.
Ngorongoro Crater Lodge
The breathtaking Ngorongoro Crater Lodge sits on the edge of the Ngorongoro Crater. Lying within the bounds of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, this secluded and private lodge is known as one of the most architecturally spectacular safari lodges in Africa.
Inspired in design by the elegant Versailles baroque chateau and the Maasai mud-and-stick manyatta, or homestead, Ngorongoro Crater Lodge features stilted, handcrafted structures adorned in graceful antiques, brocade sofas, grand chandeliers, and African treasures.
The Highlands Ngorongoro
The Highlands Ngorongoro is an exclusive luxury camp perched on the towering slopes of the Olmoti Volcano. It is the highest altitude luxury accommodation in the Ngorongoro region. It stands nearly 9,000-feet above sea level in Ngorongoro’s wild Highlands. The surrounding landscape is a mixture of largely extinct ancient volcanoes dotted with traditional Masai bomas. It is here where The Highlands Ngorongoro received its inspiration for its dome-shaped tents, mimicking the traditions of the region while also incorporating a sense of homey warmth and stylish innovation.
One part wooden yurt, one part windowed igloo, and one part tented camp, each standalone boma is unlike anything Tanzania has seen before. Inside, a natural canvas of fur throws and local wood is enhanced by black and white photographs of Masai tribesmen. Enjoy creature comforts in the form of king-size beds, solar energy, and en suite bathrooms with flush toilets and hot showers. An entire third of the boma is occupied by bays of windows facing the endless Ngorongoro panorama. Meanwhille a wood-burning stove ensures the suite remains warm throughout the night, creating a personal cocoon of comfort in the wild.
The Manor at Ngorongoro
Located on a 1,500-acre private estate, The Manor at Ngorongoro is an elegant venue from which to explore the famed Ngorongoro Crater. Cape-Dutch style buildings and lush gardens will transport you back in time to an era of colonial splendor.
Each of the whitewashed cottages are surrounded by manicured gardens and feature a private deck and courtyard, indoor and outdoor fireplaces and decors that meld antique colonial style with indigenous African handicraft. En-suite baths include a separate rain shower and tub. A swimming pool, art gallery, game room, piano lounge, and spa room with sauna and steam treatments rounds out the main building. Guided estate tours at the Manor at Ngorongoro reveal the gardens, wine cellar, on-site horse stables, and other hidden gems of the grounds.
