South Luangwa National Park

Zambia is wild and untamed. Each year, the nearly 300,000-square-mile nation sees a fraction of the tourists of neighboring countries. Yet its wildlife is plentiful and its guides are among the best in Africa. Indeed, a safari in Zambia is as authentic as they come.

To see one of the greatest wildlife sanctuaries in the world, head to South Luangwa National Park. Here, the Luangwa River and its many lagoons are the lifeblood of the park, attracting zebras, lions, and elephants. Additionally, Africa’s highest concentration of leopards also make their home within the park enhancing to your safari experience. The birdlife is prolific as well; of Zambia’s 732 total bird species, 400 are found in the park.

You can see tons of wildlife and birdlife along the banks of the river. Keep an eye out for hippopotamuses and crocodiles in the water, or elephants, buffalo, African fish eagles, egrets, and herons along the banks.

Grootbos Private Nature Reserve

After Zambia, South Africa is the perfect place to conclude a safari. Once there, head to Grootbos Private Nature Reserve in the southern tip of the country. The 6,000-acre reserve is situated between the mountains, milkwood forests, and the sea where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet. There are a number of ways to spend your days at Grootbos Forest Lodge. While here, explore the pristine wilderness on a fynbos safari in an open-top Land Rover. Within the reserve, 800 plant species have been recorded. Moreover, take one of the many trails through the ancient milkwood forest or one that leads to a breathtaking ocean vista.

Also, the area is home to the Marine Big Five: great white sharks, seals, penguins, southern whales, and dolphins. Keep an eye out for them on a coastal drive. Alternatively, try a whale watching excursion by boat. Horseback riding and quad biking add another element of adventure to your stay.
