Horseback Riding in the Okavango Delta
This Okavango horse safari combines five days of riding across Botswana’s floodplains with a classic safari stay in the northern Delta. During Ker & Downey's Botswana horse safari, ride alongside wildlife in open terrain. Because horses move quietly and naturally, animals often remain calm and close. As a result, riders experience the Okavango Delta in a direct and exciting way.

More Details
First arrive in Johannesburg and overnight at a convenient airport hotel. Rest after your international flight and prepare for your Okavango horse safari adventure beginning the next morning.
Then fly to the Okavango Delta and transfer to Kujwana Camp, your base for the first stage of your Botswana horse safari.
First begin with an orientation session and welcome ride. Experienced guides will then match you with a carefully selected horse based on your skill and experience. Finally, you will take off into the Xudum river and Baobab regions for your first horseback safari.
Ride across wide open floodplains, through palm islands, and along papyrus-lined channels. Because you are on a horse riding safari, wildlife interactions feel balanced and natural. For example, you may find yourself cantering alongside herds of wildebeest and zebra. You may also share grazing spots with nearby families of giraffe and elephant.
After long mornings of riding at Kujwana, return to camp for lunch and a welcome siesta. Later, partake in afternoon and evening game drives and cooling mokoro rides. Evenings then conclude with sunset drinks and three-course candlelit meals around the communal table. At night, listen to the lion’s roar and the hippo’s watery grunt, knowing that this is as close to Africa as you will ever get.
This phase of the Okavango horse safari focuses on open riding, strong guiding, and wildlife-rich landscapes. Indeed this safari experience promises incredible wildlife encounters, crossing off everything on your rider bucket list.
Next, ride from Kujwana Camp to Mokolwane Camp along the Matsebi River. The journey itself becomes part of the safari, as you cross varied terrain and seasonal waterways.
Mokolwane features elevated treehouse-style lodging overlooking river pools. From camp, continue daily rides across open plains and wooded areas. Of course, wildlife sightings remain strong, including elephant and antelope, providing the ultimate horse safari in Botswana.
Your final day of this Botswana horse safari concludes with a farewell meal shared with your riding group. The setting is relaxed, yet the the concept of horseback safaris remains active and engaging.
After five days in the saddle, transfer to Shinde in the northern Okavango Delta. This portion of your journey shifts from horseback exploration to traditional safari activities.
Therefore, enjoy morning and afternoon game drives, guided walks, mokoro excursions, and boat safaris. Fishing is also available seasonally. Because Shinde sits in a wildlife-rich concession, sightings often include elephant, lion, and plains game.
This final stage balances the intensity of your Okavango horse safari with a more relaxed safari rhythm.
