Beyond Revenge Travel: Why Traveling Thoughtfully Matters More than Ever

The term “revenge travel” surged in popularity as borders reopened post-pandemic. But today, travel is evolving beyond a need to make up for lost time. Travel today is about making meaningful connections and experiencing the world with intention.

So what was revenge travel? And what can we learn from it as travelers begin to step into a more thoughtful way of exploring the world?

What Was Revenge Travel?

As we all know, COVID-19 halted travel with restrictions and closed borders. But after those restrictions lifted, Americans eagerly took to the skies. Travel became easier and started to surge again.

Revenge travel, or vengeance travel, is the term used to describe this phenomenon - the surge in travel from people fed up with lockdowns and restrictions. It was a way to get back the lost  time and experiences during the pandemic years. But was traveling for travel’s sake a good thing? Overtourism was certainly an issue before the pandemic. Places like Machu Picchu and Venice saw unsustainable crowds and environmental strain.

Now more than ever, we have an opportunity to pivot - to travel with intention, support local communities, and make every journey more meaningful. By all means, travel boldly. But do so thoughtfully.

What is Responsible Tourism?

Responsible tourism is a way of traveling that makes destinations better for the people who live there, which, in turn, makes better places for people to visit. It’s tourism that works for everyone.

Traveling responsibly means seeking out experiences that foster genuine connections with local people and provide economic support to communities. This might include:

  • Participating in village-life tours that directly benefit residents
  • Participating in a cooking class with a local in their home
  • Shopping at craft and food marketings where artisans sell directly to travelers
  • Staying in lodges that employ local staff and showcase regional craftsmanship throughout it's building practices and materials used

Responsible travel is the heart of Ker & Downey. Our tagline – Making a World of Difference – isn’t just a slogan. It promises to make a difference not only in the places you visit and the communities you support, but also in the depth of your own travel experience.

The Next Chapter: Travel Thoughtfully

Where to Go

Revenge Travel to Cuba

Cuba remains a destination where your travel choices make a real difference. Due to long-standing travel restrictions, Americans must travel under one of the 12 travel categories authorized by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the Department of the Treasury.

Ker & Downey provides tours that are compliant with the guidelines created under the “Support for the Cuban People” general license category. The experiences on each Ker & Downey journey to Cuba ensure meaningful, people-to-people interactions that help locals build a better future, while also giving you a unique window into Cuba's rich culture, music, and resilience.

The Azores

The Azores continue to lead the way in sustainable travel, championing sustainable tourism as the core of their development strategy for over a decade. In 2019, it was recognized as the world’s first island archipelago to be certified under the EarthCheck Sustainable Destination program. This group of Portuguese islands remains one of the more eco-conscious tourism regions on the planet.

It's also a paradise for outdoor lovers. With opportunities to hike, mike, kayak, and scuba dive, the Azores deliver high-adventure and low-impact travel. It is also one of the world’s best destinations for whale watching, with 25 species of whales and dolphins making a home in the area.

The Galápagos Islands

Few destinations rival the Galápagos for both ecological wonder and exclusivity. Located 600 miles off Ecuador’s coast, this remote archipelago offers close encounters with iconic wildlife like giant tortoises, marine iguanas, and blue-footed boobies in one of the most protected environments on Earth.

With 97% of the land designated as a national park and strict visitor limits, conservation is at the heart of every journey. Whether aboard a luxury expedition yacht or at an eco-conscious lodge, you’ll explore in the company of expert naturalists while ensuring your visit supports the long-term preservation of this extraordinary destination.

West Africa

West Africa is a destination that not many have traveled to. But its vibrant culture, diversity, and long-surviving traditions are what make it so unique. Traveling to Benin, Togo, and Ghana opens a world of tribal communities guided by ancient spirits. Indeed, Voodoo has a strong hold here. The festivals, traditional dances, and costumes offer a fascinating glimpse into life in West Africa.

Meanwhile, a visit to the Cape Coast Castle is a sober but essential experience, offering a powerful and emotional connection to the region's past and the global legacy of the transatlantic slave trade.

Kenya

The Masai Mara is iconic, but often sees overwhelming tourist numbers. That's why we recommend community-owned conservancies offer an alternative to the Masai Mara National Reserve.

These conservancies offer the same incredible wildlife viewing but with far fewer tourists. More importantly, they support local communities by funding schools, clinics, conservation efforts, and sustainable land use practices. The conservancies are the beating heart of sustainability for the Masai Mara ecosystem. As far as responsible travel goes, this is a win-win.

Albania

Albania is quietly emerging as one of Europe's most intriguing and unspoiled destinations. Here, dramatic mountains, ancient ruins, and turquoise Adriatic beaches remain blissfully free from crowds. This Balkan gems attracts discerning travelers seeking authenticity, history, and natural beauty.

Explore UNESCO World Heritage towns, hilltop castles, and Ottoman-era architecture. Partake in private tastings at family-run wineries and private boat charters exploring hidden coves. Its quiet fishing villages and stylish boutique stays rival that of the Amalfi Coast, but with far fewer visitors.
