The area's newest luxury outpost sets out to redefine the Ngorongoro experience in Tanzania. Due to open in June 2016, The Highlands Ngorongoro is an exclusive seven-boma camp perched on the towering slopes of the Olmoti Volcano. Between its jaw-dropping views across the Serengeti and its utterly remote address, The Highlands Ngorongoro balances culture, comfort, and adventure in an unforgettably stylish, private setting.
The Highlands Ngorongoro is slated to be the highest altitude luxury accommodation in the Ngorongoro region, standing nearly 9,000-feet above sea level in Ngorongoro’s wild Highlands. The surrounding landscape is a mixture of largely extinct ancient volcanoes dotted with traditional Masai bomas. It is here where The Highlands Ngorongoro received its inspiration for its seven dome-shaped tents, mimicking the traditions of the region while also incorporating a sense of homey warmth and stylish innovation. One part wooden yurt, one part windowed igloo, and one part tented camp, each standalone boma is unlike anything Tanzania has seen before. Inside, a natural canvas of fur throws and local wood is enhanced by black and white photographs of Masai tribesmen and creature comforts in the form of king-size beds, solar energy, and en-suite bathrooms with flush toilets and hot showers. An entire third of the boma is occupied by bays of windows facing the endless Ngorongoro panorama, while a wood-burning stove ensures the suite remains warm throughout the night, creating a personal cocoon of comfort in the wild. Romantics are sure to gravitate to the Honeymoon suite with its private hot tub, and families will appreciate the extra spread-out space of the two-domed Family suite.
The main congregational area of The Highlands Ngorongoro is divided between the modern dining room, the cozy bar and lounge, and the central circular fireplace, designed so that guests can enjoy the quintessential safari campfire experience even when the altitude deems it too chilly to go outside. No matter where guests roam on the property, they are afforded some of the finest views in the country. The Highlands Ngorongoro was deliberately positioned in this highlands wilderness for many reasons, the most stunning of which are the panoramic sunset and sunrise views. From camp, one can look out onto the Gol Mountains in the northwest, Empakaai in the east, the Olmoti crater rim to the south, and the wildlife in Ngorongoro below.
The other benefits of The Highlands Ngorongoro’s unique location are the maximum privacy and the range of activities available. From this stylish base, guests can enjoy so much more than simply the classic Ngorongoro crater game drive descent, although that is certainly a fundamental part of the entire Highlands Ngorongoro package. They can also set out on longer walks and treks through the Crater Highlands, free from the restrictions of the National Park regulations, and visit some of the nearby Masai villages where the pastoral way of life has remained unchanged for centuries. Here, conservation is just as much about culture as it as about wildlife. And of course, should the desire arise, guests can be inside one of the richest wildlife viewing areas in Africa before sunrise and away from the tourists.Request Information
