Rwanda
Rwanda is a verdant, landlocked country in East Africa known as the “Land of a Thousand Hills” for its fertile hills. Most of the countryside is dotted with small farms, but there are areas of rugged mountains that extend from the volcanoes of the northwestern portion of the country. It is here that the country’s leading tourist attraction is found: a protected population of mountain gorillas that can be visited with special government permits by only a few people per day. Loved and studied for years by researcher Dian Fossey, these amazing apes are greatly endangered and a visit with them will leave an impression on any traveler.
In addition to Volcanoes National Park, the country is home to Nyungwe Forest, which shelters populations of many other primate species including chimpanzees. Lake Kivu is known for its resorts and majestic vistas, and Akagera is a small reserve in the eastern portion of the country.
