At Ker & Downey, we believe that people matter. It’s the people who make up this incredible company who work to make your journey truly memorable. Over the course of the next year, we’ll be introducing you to the people that make up Ker & Downey. You can also read more about us here.
Before joining the Ker & Downey team in 2010, Katy spent several years in both the radio broadcasting and event planning industries. She assumed the role of Marketing Manager in 2013. Her travels have taken her to France, Monaco, Italy, the Caribbean, Argentina, Brazil, Peru, UAE, and Tanzania. When she is not in the office, Katy volunteers with a local animal shelter, Special Pals. She also enjoys spending time sewing and creating with paper, attending live theatre and sporting events, and exploring the outdoors with her family.
Favorite place you’ve traveled: So far, Argentina. I loved getting to sample a little bit of everything in a diverse country.
What is the best thing about traveling: The intangible things you take back with you, and the ways with which you can apply what you’ve learned in another part of the world to your own life. My first trip to Africa took me to the Serengeti at the tail end of the Migration, and there were still a fair number of wildebeest calves being born. Our guides explained the biology behind the Migration – that the wildebeest are on the move late in the pregnancy seeking the nutrient-rich grasses to give a boost to baby and mom for healthy births and nursing afterward. This lead to conversations about maternal habits of hyena, antelope, elephants, and others. Learning about mothering via the game was especially fascinating and reflecting back during the trip and upon my return it gave me a big “a-ha” moment – everything on this earth has a perfect design.
Travel accessory you can’t live without? Headphones of some sort. I’ll wear them even if they aren’t being used for their intended purpose. I’ve worn them as a security blanket in the absence of bug netting. I wear them on the plane as a universal sign for “please let me be”.
Top of my travel bucket list: Australia. It is such an intriguing and beautiful place, east coast to west. India is a very, very close second – I want to go to the Pushkar Camel Fair and would also like to attend the Festival Fringe someday.
Beach or mountains: Mountains – as a Houston native I don’t get to see much in the way of elevation.
How do you take your coffee? I’ve evolved from doctoring my homebrews to adding nothing… but I still splurge on Chai Tea Lattes.
My theme song is: I’d have to have a theme playlist. I’ve never been able to stick to one genre or artist.
Any pets? Too many, if you ask my husband. Three rescued cats – Reeses, Chewbacca, and Fleck – and a beagle named Sheila. If I have my way, I’ll be minding four-legged children until the day I die.
If I were a super hero, I would be: Very tired.
It’s Sunday morning at 10 a.m. If I’m not sleeping, I’m: Drinking tea and telling stories with my daughters in our living room.
My favorite physical activity is: Aside from insanely silly dance parties with my toddler, pilates.
One thing I love that everyone else dislikes is: Brussels sprouts. As vegetables go they get the most negative feedback.
The first thing I do when I wake up is: Have a good long stretch.
One thing people are surprised to find out about me is: I’ve performed in Carnegie Hall.
The last concert I went to was: Justice in October 2013. I’m overdue for another.
If I could instantly learn a new language, I would learn: French
Guilty TV pleasure: Star Trek: Voyager on Netflix. Two words: Kate Mulgrew.
On my nightstand: The latest Houstonia and Texas Highways magazines, and “Yes Please” by Amy Pohler.
