Matemwe is located on Unguja, the main island of Zanzibar, along the northern coast directly across from Mnemba Atoll. Surrounded by some of the best white sand beaches in Zanzibar, the lodge is known for friendly staff, excellent snorkeling and diving, tranquil surroundings, and delectable cuisine.

The relaxed atmosphere and secluded location of Matemwe makes it the ultimate tropical paradise. The lodge comprises 12 bungalows each built from local materials and surrounded by a lush garden. The bungalows feature private verandas overlooking the Indian Ocean, and the chalets are extremely spacious, with large en suite bathrooms and an extra bed.

Matemwe is perfect for discovering the amazing waters of the Indian Ocean and the culture of Zanzibar or for simply enjoying a quiet beach holiday. The lodge can easily arrange ocean trips in motor or sail boats with snorkeling equipment, or you can snorkel straight from the beach or during a reef walk. Discover the little island of Mnemba Atoll and the amazing coral reefs. Diving trips can be organized with a professional diving center, and local snorkeling and diving sites are great for all skill levels. During your explorations, you will be surprised by the incredible diversity of marine life from corals and anemone to playful dolphins, and in August through October, you may spot a whale or two. Kayaking is also available for guests that want to adventure on their own.

For those that want to keep their heads above water, visits to the neighboring village can be arranged to learn about local culture, village life, and the community projects that Matemwe supports. Day trips can also be arranged to Stone Town, Jozani Forest, or Prison Island. If you are interested in culinary pursuits, the lodge can arrange a Spice Tour for you to learn about the history of the spice trade and the variety of spices for which the island is famous.

The open-air restaurant and lounge overlooks the ocean. Seafood is the specialty, and the lodge has an arrangement with the local fishermen who bring in their fresh catches every morning. Produce is bought fresh daily from the local markets, ensuring that all of your meals are of the highest quality. Lunch buffets offer a mix of African and European cuisine, and dinner features a choice of main courses with seafood, meat, and vegetarian options. The multi-level swimming pool also features a poolside bar that serves fresh juices and cocktails.

Matemwe Retreat

Matemwe also features a special option at the Matemwe Retreat, just north of the main lodge. The retreat comprises four private villas measuring over 1,500 square feet each. Each villa has a private bar, an air-conditioned bedroom, and a large bathroom with an over-sized tub overlooking the Indian Ocean. Your roof terrace features a private plunge pool with a shaded sun deck, and the villas all have their own beaches. The entire retreat was constructed by local craftsman of indigenous materials where possible, with furnishings and décor also locally sourced.

The service at the Retreat is highly personalized. Breakfast is served each day on your private veranda, and the manager or chef will stop by every day to discuss lunch and dinner arrangements. You can receive massage or beauty treatments on your private terrace, and you have access to all of the amenities of the main lodge.
