Ruaha National Park
As the largest national park in Tanzania, Ruaha covers an expanse over the middle of the country. The park earned its name from the Great Ruaha River, which flows to the southeast, and is also part of an extensive ecosystem that includes the Rungwa and Usanga Game Reserves. Game viewing is at its prime in this pristine location.
The creation of a national park in this area was first proposed in 1949 by the Senior Game Ranger in Mbeya but was not given the distinction until 1964. Ruaha remains famous for its population of elephants, currently at 10,000, and is also a great place for birding and bird photography. Over 400 species have been identified of an estimated total of 475, among these are hornbills, kingfishers, sunbirds and many migrants birds like the white stork.
