Chada Katavi

Chada Katavi is the place for the wildlife connoisseur and the traveler who thinks the African bush can offer up no more surprises. Here at the camp, your safari experience will come to life among its variety of inhabitants and the natural sounds of the wild. Happily indulged, watching the elephants head out to water as dusk falls, you feel like one of the last great pioneers, with binoculars in your hand and Africa filling your head.

Property Details

Hidden in the trees that flank it are six guest tents, with fine wooden furniture, large comfortable beds spread with crisp white Egyptian cottons, and floors covered with thick woven rugs. The tents are large, romantic and airy with many shade netting windows to allow the cool breezes through. The bathrooms are bush deluxe and set just behind each bedtent. And, to cap it all off, the delicious white wine sitting on your porch table is perfectly chilled.

The small crew, most of who have been here since the camp began, is meticulous with service and food is of a high standard. The local knowledge of the guides here is unrivaled.

Katavi National Park is one of the greatest wildlife experiences of the world, located in western Tanzania, largely undiscovered and very definitely off the beaten track. It is thought to have a greater density of mammals than in any other Tanzanian reserve. The floodplains of Chada contain hippo in their hundreds, not just in the rivers but grazing on the banks in their masses. Elephants head to water morning and evening, and ranging across the open spaces are vast herds of wild Cape buffalo, shadowed by lion, hyena, and leopard.

Spend your days enjoying the activities available at Chada Katavi. You can take your pick from game drives in open four-wheel-drive vehicles, walking with a guide, or soaking it all up from your tent veranda.

Walking safaris take you even deeper into Katavi´s untamed world. Rare roan and sable antelope, normally skittish and shy, graze openly on these plains. On foot, you experience another side of Africa, that which takes flight at the sound of approaching vehicles. The game is unbelievable, with sightings of elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah, crocodiles, and hippo among many others. And then at the end of a day of adventure and discovery, you return to the creature comforts and welcoming fireside of camp.
