Volcanoes National Park

Volcanoes National Park is home to 340 of the 720 mountain gorillas that survive worldwide, and it is also the location where Dian Fossey studied mountain gorillas for 20 years. There are four groups of Mountain Gorillas located in the Rwandan sector of the Virunga Volcanoes: the Susa Group, Sabyinyo Group, Group Thirteen, and Amahoro Group. Trekking times to reach each group vary from two to seven hours depending upon their movements. Most days there are several groups within two-hour treks of the car park. During the wet season trekking times are reduced to as little as 20 minutes as the gorillas move to lower elevations to feed.

Also interesting are the recently habituated golden monkeys, which can also be visited in this region with special trekking permits, as well as the magnificent crater lakes that have formed through the centuries in this majestic region.

Endangered Gorillas – The Virunga Project
The Virunga Gorilla Project, sponsored by Wildlife Direct, a non-profit agency, is one of several projects that our staff at Ker & Downey support.  Once you’ve visited these incredible animals up-close, they magically capture your soul and leave a footprint in your heart that will last a lifetime.  Sadly, these animals are victims of a cruel world.  Poachers, war and those who hunt them for treasure and profit are quickly reducing the populations to the critically endangered stage.  Fortunately, with the help of devoted local rangers and Wildlife Direct donations to help fund the project, the gorillas have renewed hope.  Click here to visit this website and learn more about this amazing project and how you can help.
