Paracas/Southern Coast

This region was once the home to some of the most influential ancient cultures in Peru, and today is a fascinating destination off the beaten path. With a wealth of reserves, parks and a stunning coastal location, Paracas is a haven for outdoor adventurers. Marine life is plentiful and an especially large population of marine birds can be found along the coast or gathering on nearby islands. The Ballestas Islands are an important sanctuary for fur seals, sea lions, blue-footed boobies, Humboldt penguins and many other species.

Incredible pre-Incan discoveries date back before the Common Era and represent several ancient indigenous cultures. The area is home to the famous ancient geoglyphs the Nazca Lines and the Paracas Candelabra, both unforgettable marvels to view by air. Many more artifacts from the era are on display at the Museo Sitio de Julio C. Tello, named for the Peruvian archaeologist who helped uncover the mysteries of the prehistoric Paracas culture in the early 1900s.
