Machu Picchu
Perhaps the most famous example of Incan ruins and the most-visited tourist attraction in Peru, Machu Picchu was officially rediscovered in 1911 by American explorer Hiram Bingham. Having escaped the notice of the Spanish conquistadors due to its remote location, Machu Picchu was able to avoid much of the damage incurred by other important Incan archaeological sites, and in addition to being on the UNESCO World Heritage List, the well-preserved site has been named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
You can reach the Citadel via a number of routes, including the luxurious Hiram Bingham train, the large-windowed Vistadome train, or by a hike up the Inca Trail. Once you arrive at the Citadel, your options are not limited to the staggeringly beautiful ruins of the city. You can also hike up Huayna Picchu, the second hill, to view Machu Picchu from above, or you can hike to the Sun Gate, where you can experience magnificent sunrises.
Machu Picchu is known as one of South America’s most important archaeological sites, and your Ker & Downey travel expert is waiting to help you design your trip of a lifetime to this magical locale.
