Cusco
Cusco is the historic capital of the Inca Empire, and its multitude of archaeological and cultural sites draw upwards of a million tourists every year. Just outside of Cusco, you can tour the amazing ruins of the fortress at Sacsayhuaman, another example of the Incas’ incredible engineering talents and the site of an even earlier pre-Incan temple believed to have been built by the Killke people.
In the city, there are fine examples of colonial architecture, many of which make use of ancient Incan ruins such as the Koricancha Temple, which has been incorporated into the Santo Domingo Convent. Visit the sprawling Plaza de Armas and the many museums to discover more about the fascinating history of this city. In addition, Cusco is one of the best locations in Peru from which to begin your journey to Urubamba (the Sacred Valley of the Incas) and Machu Picchu.
