North Island
Whispered in the mists of the island is its mythological beginning. Maui, the Polynesian trickster, caught his largest fish ever in North Island, at Lake TauponuiaTia. He then told his brothers to guard the fish and that it would make a fine place “dwelling place for many”. His brothers were then said to have ignored Maui and killed the fish. As a result, the spasms of this regions geysers, volcanoes, and mud pools are said to be the fish’s heartbeat.
At over 38,600 square miles in area, North Island is the world’s 14th largest island. As one of only two islands that comprise New Zealand, this island is most famously known for the two cities of Auckland, the country’s largest city, and Wellington, the nation’s capital. This area has a breadth of landscaping, from white sandy beaches to rolling farmland and volcanic peaks.
