Set amid the red dunes of Sossusvlei, Kulala Desert Lodge is nestled on a 46,000 acre private wilderness reserve. Northern African inspirations set the tone of the décor here and the main lodge holds a gorgeous lounge with a large deck, a perfect location to view and photograph the desert environment. In addition, the main lodge also offers romantic dining options, a refreshing plunge pool, and ambience that is a delight to the senses.
The lodge offers 15 "kulalas", meaning "to sleep" in Oshiwambo. Each are individual clay, thatch, and canvas structures with en suite bathrooms and magnificent verandas. Each room is built on a platform designed to allow the cooling breezes to flow throughout the structures. Climb to the rooftop of each kulala for a private deck where luxury bedrolls are placed for guests who wish to spend an evening sleeping under the stars of Africa, a truly unforgettable experience.
There are 11 kulalas with twin beds, two double kulalas, and two large kulalas with family rooms, which are perfect for extra guests or members of your family. Complete with ceiling fans to maximize the airflow, the en suite bathrooms are spacious with showers, flush toilets, and sinks.
Early morning guided nature drives to the dunes of Sossusvlei are exclusive to guests of Kulala as entry is through a private gate on the Tsauchab River. Viewing the dunes is akin to witnessing millions of years of winds and nature. Many of these dunes are as tall as skyscrapers and the sights are phenomenal and incredible.
In addition, guests can experience nature drives within the private reserve. As an option, guests can arrange for morning hot air balloon rides to glimpse the morning light of the desert, a photographers' delight. Balloon safaris are an additional cost, so make sure you pre-schedule this experience with your Ker & Downey representative in advance. This special experience is highlighted by a champagne breakfast served to you at your landing site on touch down. Other optional tours include horseback safaris, and families or small groups can book private safari vehicles for their own personal use.
