Bazaruto Archipelago
The stunning Bazaruto Archipelago off the Mozambique coast consists of four main islands: Bazaruto Island, Benguerra Island, Magaruque Island and Santa Carolina (Paradise) Island, situated 30 klometers from Vilanculos in Inhambane Province. As a protected National Park, the archipelago is home to over 180 species of birds, indigenous butterflies, suni antelope and freshwater crocodiles. Under the crystal blue waters, it supports dolphin, dugong, gamefish, giant lobster and several species of marine turtle.
Bazaruto, Benguerra and Maguruque were once part of an intricate sand peninsula that was attached to the Mozambique mainland, but separated as the continent slowly dipped into the ocean. On the eastern edges of these islands there is the Mozambique channel. This waterway is bountiful with game fish and attracts many big game fishermen every year from all over the world. The protected coral reefs below the surface also attract vibrant marine life. The peaceful, colorful display of these reefs provide some of the best diving and snorkeling experiences the world can offer.
