Joy's Camp

Joy’s Camp is built on the site of Joy Adamson’s tented home in Shaba National Reserve, which was also the home of Penny the leopard, the heroine of Joy’s last book. The region is semi-arid with rugged hills, great kopjes, and lots of springs to support wildlife.

Property Details

The ten canvas bedrooms are raised off the ground and sport amazing views of the surrounding hills. The elegant accommodations are uniquely decorated with vibrant fabrics from the local nomadic tribes, handmade glass, and Boran and Somali cloth designs, creating a sophisticated and inviting atmosphere. Each tent has a private veranda where guests can relax and view game from the comfort of their tent.

Game drives at Joy’s Camp are fascinating, with varied populations of wildlife in the area including Grevy’s zebra, Somali ostrich, generuk, reticulated giraffe, lesser kudu, leopard, lion, and herds of elephant. You can also partake in guided bush walks or visit the local village to interact with its inhabitants and learn about their traditional culture.

Cuisine at Joy’s Camp is inspired by Northern Italian food, and guests will enjoy dining in the evening in the comfortable main lounge. The camp also arranges bush meals along the Ewaso Nyiro River and Gorge, and each evening, guests can take part in the sundowner tradition, toasting the day that has passed to a vibrant sunset.
