Petra
Petra, the “rose red city, half as old as time” is a marvel and known wonder of the world. Its story begins over 2,000 years ago, in ancient times. Built by the Nabateans, Petra became a bustling city centre and capital of the historic culture. Petra continued its growth until earthquakes shattered its infrastructure and wiped out its water systems. Here, in the sands of time, Petra would be lost forever.
It was not until 1812 that Swiss explorer, Johann Ludwig Burckhardt, disguised as an Arab scholar, infiltrated the Bedouin-occupied city in 1812 and discovered the lost city. Burckhardt’s stories inspired other explorers and historians to discover this Jordanian treasure. Finally, after 1929 and the forming of the Trans-Jordan, Petra excavations began.
The magnificence and splendor of Petra is truly a sight to behold. You may also recognize Petra from its role in the epic, Indiana Jones.
