Western Desert
The dry and arid Western Desert lies west of the Nile in Egypt and Libya. In most of Upper Egypt, the desert comes very close to the banks of the Nile, with a flood plain only a few kilometers wide. This regions accounts for almost two-thirds of Egypt’s entire land area and spans from the Mediterranean Sea down to the Sudanese border. Uninterrupted rocks and other escarpments showcase a phenomenal rocky and harsh terrain with massive plateaus. The Great Sand Sea also lies within this region and is a popular destination for tourists.
