Northern Amazon
The Northern Amazon region of Brazil is the least densely populated area of Brazil, with Manaus its largest city. The region includes cerrado, or tropical savanna, but is mostly made up of the dense tropical rainforest of the Amazon, where more than one third of all of the planet’s species can be found.
Manaus acts as the gateway for this portion of the country, and there are many sights worth stopping over for a day in the city to explore, including the Meeting of the Waters, where the Rio Negro and the Rio Solimões join together and flow alongside one another for miles without the waters mixing.
A visit to the Northern Amazon of Brazil would be an excellent accompaniment to an itinerary including the Southern Amazon region, especially Mato Grasso, or the Peruvian Amazon. Consult your Ker & Downey travel expert to learn more.
